What exactly is a proxy server and how do I use one? I have heard they can be used for securtiy purposed etc. Please clear this up for me. Thanks !

A Proxy server stands between the WAN and your LAN. It can be used to enforce surfing policy and screen content. It can be made to cache and prefetch web content over slow links in order to make surfing appear faster to the users. It's not meant for security but does have some security features. A firewall is used for security.
