Whats the best way to test your cable connection to make sure its up to par?
I use broadband wizard to test my connection and it is not constitant and does not get close to the 1 megabyte speed that i'm supposed to have? Are these things accurate?

This isn't probably the most accurate way but gives me an idea... http://www.msn.zdnet.com/partners/msn/bandwidth/speedtest.htm

Also if your speed is slower than expected you may want to use a program like this one: http://download.cnet.com/downloads/0-10062-100-1433245.html?tag=st.dl.10001-103-1.lst-7-1.1433245

I know it says Intelli"Dial Up" but that doesn't mean anything, it has settings for cable also. After using it, my cable connection speed increased by about 2 to 2.5 times

Try this: http://www.dslreports.com/stest
I routinely get about 2Mbps with my @Home cable modem service. Unfortunately the upload is fixed at only 128kbps.

Microsoft's test site typically gives me 1Mbps, still blazingly fast compared to dialup or even DSL.

It will ALWAYS vary because it depends on the traffic on the Internet as a whole and through your local cable network, as well as the load on the site you are testing with and the path between your PC and that site. That, too, will always vary. The beauty of the Internet; you never know axactly how you're gonna get there from here!

Late last night, when most folks here on the East coast were heading for bed and traffic should have been light, I was getting INCREDIBLY bad throughput. Got up this AM and all is fine. It just depends.

Call your cable supplier. If you were promised a certain performance level then you may have some legal recourse. Regardless, they may be willing to help you; my supplier, Cox Communications in Northern Virginia, was EAGER to help.
