not true
Electronically might sound possible
but Digitally, it's controlled remotely off their central command.
and besides you still need yet another Cable Modem, without taking into consideration that your Cable Modem, needs to have it's MAC address listed in their computer.
else their software will not relay signal to it.
so yeah nice try, but it doesn't work
unless you can hack into their Radius and add your MAC address there :D

I have been recieveing free internet for about two years now. At 3 differant addresses. I came upon this on accident actually . I already had cable in a previous address. and moved. I knew what it took to get internet so i already had everything set up for internet again and when they came to install cable again..my modem light up..Surprised me. Well i told my friend who was waiting on internet hook up also and he tried it..It worked..The only thing that i dont recieve is email service through them..since i found out about this i cancelled my account..and now just use weedmail. If you are on cable give it a shot.. i promise you will be surprised. No speciel hook ups or modems or ethernet cards..i just plug and go..Any body on dial up reading this and has a modem and basic cable..should try this. Just split off your cable wire attach..Reboot puter and your modem will work. I told my brother about it..it worked at his house..My friend at his...he told his girlfriend..worked and mine..So you cant say impossible..:p

well in America that was only possible before all Cables ISP upgraded their systems to do what i said ealier.
so it seems like the Cable ISP in your area is still using the Old System

Jeesh, where do you live? That certainly won't work here in San Diego! :p And if it did, wouldn't it be considered as cable fraud?

Theft of cable service is a Federal Offense punishable by one year in jail (if I remember correctly) and a hefty fine (several thousand dollar$).
As some extra proof of this NOT working in all areas:
I live in Pennsylvania. I signed up for cable modem service using their rented modem ($5 per month). After one month I bought my own modem for $60 and tried to install it. Nothing happened. No signal, no connection. I called the tech support and they said I needed to give them the MAC address of the modem and the serial number. After this info was entered into their database I was able to connect several minutes later.
I will now be closing this thread to reduce the possibility of anyone else getting any ideas.
