Hey guys!
I have a duron 950 box with 40gig HDD in it and am dual booting Mandrake Linux 8.2 and Win98SE. The problem is when I start it up, it goes through POST and shows the PCI device listing and everything, then instead of showing LILO, my boot loader, All it displays is "LI"
After displaying that it will not respond to anything but the Ctrl-Alt-Del keys.
I haven't changed anything system-wise and I have no clue what LI means. Maybe some linux techie out there can help me.
Thanks in advance, David

Which OS did you install first?
Are the two in the same partition?

I installed Windows 98 first.
When I installed linux I put it on a different partition.

could the "li" simply be the first part of the word "lilo"? I've seen truncated words show up like that before. Just a thought.

The problem is my comp won't boot. It doesn't show LILO (boot loader) all it shows is a black screen with LI at the bottom left corner, can't boot up.
"LI" might stand for "LILO" but how can I get my pc to boot?
Thanks

The "LI" means that lilo isn't able to access the boot device for some reason.

ok, I've had machines with dual boot before, especially win9x and linux. The best thing that I found was that I will install Linux AFTER win9x and I will choose not to write to the master boot record, but for me to boot linux from a floppy.
otherwise than that you can kiss off your operating system's and have to format the drive's and mbr if you aren't able to fix the problem.

Correct!
and the #1 cause for that to happen is when during Install the LiLo options has not been setup properly to suppor the HDD in use.
with some HDD/partitions is easy, with some it's bit trickier, i've seen that happend to my self way more than once.
but it's always easy to recover if you know what to change :t
