Okay, I got 2 problems, maybe 3 since its the wifes pc. She started having OE5.5 lockups on a W98se pc. Everything else worked. IE Repair didnt fix it. So I upgraded to XP pro. The same issue came back. I noticed afterwards, XP has somehow installed SCSI/RAID and the WD IDE drive as SCSI. Not sure the 2 problems are related. The drive and other programs are working fine. Up until recently the pc has worked very very stable. This is an internet pc only.

Any ideas what the OE6 issue is?
How do I handle the mis configured IDE HDD and SCSI/RAID thing?

I've updated drivers, rechecked the nic settings and cleaned and defraged windows.

Bewildered and looking for answers:confused:

Where is the drive connected to? If it's on the IDE ports on the mainboard, that's an error. If there are secondary IDE ports from a Highpoint or Promise controller, you're cool.

The single best way to diagnose any problems is to install the chipset drivers for your motherboard. Your choices are Intel, AMD, VIA, SiS and ALi.

The Outlook Express problem is not new:

Even for the chipset integrated IDE channels, NT based Windowses classify your stuff as SCSI as soon as you run 3rd party drivers. (Architecturally, NT and its offsprings do run IDE controllers within the SCSI driver stack, with a command set translation of course. So from an NT insider's technical standpoint the display is correct, although it is confusing and useless for the people. Does YOU ARE IN A HELICOPTER mean anything to you? :))

Thanks for your replies.

Yes, I did install the ALi chipset drivers from ALi . Perhaps this is when it started reporting the SCSI entries. Also, installed and ran the IDE Utility to be sure I'm in UDMA mode. Anyhow, although it does'nt look right it appears to be functioning fine, I think. I suppose this is what happens when XP says...
"the 3rd party drivers are not XP certified and may not work correctly ..." or something like that.
If I need to put back the XP certified drivers, how would I do it?

BipolarBill,
Those articles refer to OE5 for W98/ME not OE6 for XP. I thought the XP upgrade would have fixed the problem. But its still happening. Do I use the same fix?

Where are the drives connected? Are you familiar with the motherboard? It may have a Promise or Highpoint UDMA66 controller onboard.

The drivers that are built in to Windows XP are more than adequate for a slightly older motherboard.

Got impatient and searched MSKB on OE lockups. Seemed there was a possiblity the wifes Identity may have been wrong or bad from the upgrade. There was a discrepancy, so I deleted and renewed her ID. Seems to be working , but we'll keep an eye on it. If it returns then I'll try your fix , Bill.

Yes , I'm familiar with the mobo. Buildt a few for the home. The mobo is older PcChips 726mrt, Ali 1621 chipset. Your standard IDE channels, UDMA 33. Not a board to be proud of , but its been solid since day one until recently. There was a big XP crash last weekend, and I had to restore to get windows back up. I had been running on the XP drivers until then. So thought I should try updating all the drivers, etc. The SCSI appeared afterwards I believe. I dont remember them there after 1st install. I always check Device Manager after any changes for any conflicts , etc. All looked normal then. So, XP is listing the IDE drive incorrectly. BTW , it also installed the SCSI/Raid Controller. There is not one onboard or otherwise. So what do ya think, Bill?

I find Peter's comments interesting. My experience is limited with W98se.

Pierre knows his stuff. You'd do well to soak it up.

I think that a BIOS update is in order first. Better yet, why not cough up a few measley bux and install a Promise Ultra100/133 controller card?

You'll get better performance and excellent HDD compatibility. I use them in new systems so that I can get more IDE channels. :r

Have the latest bios... think I'd rather update the mobo. ;) Thanks for all your help.
