I`m trying to install a couple of 166mhz AT format mainboards for the kids. Neither board has a PS/2 port for the mouse. No problem...serial mouse, right? No, they aren`t detected and the bios on both shows the mouse is not installed. How do I install the mouse? Thanks, Gary

I`m not sure of the brand...bios is somewhere in 1993 era.One board even came with a book but i couldn`t find a "mouse" jumper to activate it.Both boards show that serial ports are live.I thought about the Win 98 install,to but when it got to the second part of the install I couldn`t complete it without an active mouse to choose "I accept the terms".

Sounds like you have the wrong kind of internal cable for the mouse port. I have run into this before. Seems there are two different "standards" for the pin-outs on the COMx headers and if the cables you are using do not match those pin-outs, you will get this exact result. In other words, you CANNOT just go to your local computer supply store and buy a mouse connector; it may not work (been there, done that). Those cables are specific to the mobo. I learned this the hard way and, in my ignorance, tossed a couple of perfectly good mobo's before I realized the truth.

If you search diligently on SysOpt, there is a good thread that gives more of the technical details. I did not find it in a quick search but I know it's there cuz I just read it a few weeks ago.

The boards I got both came with original cables so I`m not sure what might be wrong in the cable department.....and I thought I would be able to arrow key and enter my way thru the win install process but when I got to the "I accept" part I couldn`t do anything. I`ll keep trying. Thanks, Gary

Everything that you can do on a system can be done from the keyboard. use the Tab key to go from item to item and use the space bar to sent "I agree".

I am curious to see if finishing the install fixes your porblem.

Thanks for the thought, daveleau. I thought I tried every thing but I`m not sure if I tabbed or not. I`ll post again later with the results. Gary
I just remembered...I`ve got an old 286 that I know I used a mouse on. I`ll have to open it up and see what that serial cable looks like.

Well....the 286 idea was a joke...a totally different beast. Yes, the tab did get me thru a complete install of win 98,however.....it gave me the message that a mouse was not detected. I could plug in a serial mouse(which I already had) or turn it off and plug in a PS/2. Still no mouse.daverme..do you remember anything about the special mouse cable?

They looked identical to me, I could not tell the difference. What are the two motherboards? I have LOTS of cables lying around (actually, they're all in one box) and with a little experimenting I might be able to come up with one of each and send them to you. Can't garauntee that, though. I also have several AT mobo's in the house, all working. If we are extremely lucky, we may have a match on one. So, again, what are the mobo's? Dave

First of all daverme...thanks for hanging in on this problem and, by the way, I DID find the thread you were referring to. It kept going back to specific pin assignment and I haven`t taken the time to decipher the code. Now on to the mobos....the first one is a little difficult so say. It has a couple of stickers on it and they say PBA636635-824 and CA647697-001. No mobo info comes up on the post except that the bios is 1992.....the second board is brand new(bios 1995) and even comes with a manual that refers to a PS/2 mouse port that isn`t there. Anyway, the manual says it`s a TS54P AIO (for Phoenix BIOS).No other board ID info mentioned anywhere.Hope this helps...thanks, Gary
