I'm working with an ECS P6EXP-ME mobo, w/ a i440LX chipset, Celeron MMX 366Mhz cpu, and newly upgraded 256mb PC100 SDRAM. Now that I have upgraded my RAM I am wondering whether or not to change my virtual memory settings. Should I use a fixed-sized or variable-sized swap file or should I even use one at all. Any assistance with this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks...

Click on the search button here and search for: swap file. You'll find dozens and dozens of posts on the subject.

Here's a link that you'll certainly come across if you use the search suggestion.

The Definitive Swapfile Optimization Guide (http://www.rojakpot.com/Speed_Demonz/Swapfile_Optimization/Swapfile_Optimization_01.htm)

I still use a method I learned a couple of years ago. The Virtual Memory should be 2.5 times the amount of RAM in your system. Minimum and Maximum should be the same. Maybe this method is out of date, but it's the one I use.

The link given by Fingers says nothing about optimal settings.

I have taken other's advice and set my swap file to static (same amount as RAM)...didn't really notice a difference. BTW, I have 384mb in Win98. Screwing with the swap file with this amount of memory isn't going to do squat. The only answer is Win2k, which I am working on getting http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
