I have problem with a computer I brought at an auction recently, it’s spec is: Pentium mmx 200mhz with 32mb of Edo ram running Win 98 second edition with a 1.5gb h/d and an extra h/d with just 324mb and the drive is named as MS-DOS 6 with only 16kb used (I’ve never seen this before and haven’t got a clue what it’s for). When I first switched it on I noticed it could only display 16 or 256 colours, so I checked in the device manager and there was one yellow question mark beside “other device” PCI Serial Controller. It’s Device status said, “The drivers for this device are not installed (Code 28) To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall. I assumed that someone had deleted something they shouldn’t have and after I had fdisced, formatted and reinstalled Windows 98 it would fix the problem, but it didn’t. After it was reinstalled the bios screen and the windows desktop (but never the Windows banner) came up in black & white a few times. So at the moment it is not seeing the pci modem or displaying more than 256 colours. Does anybody know where I can get this driver from or how to fix this problem?

I would not know what I was looking for. I do not what a PCI Serial Controller is, I am presuming it is part of the motherbord which controls the PCI expantion slots, and if so I would'nt have thorght it needed a driver.
Try getting SiSoft Sandra (http://www.sisoftware.demon.co.uk/) and using its "PCI bus information" module. Your "unknown" PCI device will probably be listed there, look for the "OEM/Product Device Name".

The drive was formatted using MS-DOS and probably contains only the FAT and the volume name. The original owner probably wanted to be able to dual boot to Win98 with FAT32 and DOS 6 with FAT16.

Remove the modem and Clear NVRAM. You never got to the banner because the system was trying to enumerate devices and there is probably a contradiction in BIOS memory. After you get the system to boot, you can try reinstalling the modem. (make sure you have remove all DUN's and have correct drivers available before doing so).
