Is anyone aware of any testing that quantifies the quality differences between various CD-R disks - Mr. Data, Maxell, Fuji, etc........?
(Follow up)
Once again, SysOpt provides access to meaningful anwers.........from users. I've got a stack of Fuji's and Memorex to play with for awhile. From the info everyone was kind enough to provide, you do the best you can.

Personally, I look for compatibility for the specific drive over quality.... They all seem pretty equal in quality other than Gold... I noticed that certain CD Burners drives work well with certain brands of CDR media.....I've had bad luck with Memorex CDR media on my Plextor 8/4/32

I too have had bad luck with Memorex. They are so dark that they don't work in my dad's 3 year old CD-ROM. They don't work in my portable cd player with anti-skip on.
On the contrary to caddmann, I have had not so good experience with cheapos. The "brand" I used makes frequent coasters. They also don't work whatesover in my portable cd player. They work fine for data, though. BUT probably don't work that well in my dad's computer because they are so dark.
Imation and Verbatim have always worked excellent for me. This is a stock Dell CD-RW.

It just depends upon the equipment, both recording and playback. The ability to record has as much to do with copyprotection as equipment configuration. It's not an exact science. Some playback equipment see the tracks differently.
But personally, I've never had any problems with any disc. I just purchase whatever's on sale!

BSD boy - great link! very informative!
I had heard that gold was better, so I use brand name gold/green discs for important data. For audio discs I use el cheapo ($10 for 100) CompUSA silver. About 1 in 15 of this make coasters but the price can't be beat....

No, not necessarily..... Memorex isn't a bad brand, I don't think... I just noticed that it doesn't do so well with certain burners.

I always buy whatever "el cheapo" discs are on sale. Haven't made a coaster yet.

My beef with Memorex is that they don't work well with my portable cd player...my burner works fine with them.
