I hung around at this site a lot in my younger days, and I remember how we would always bash Best Buy, Comp USA, Circuit City, etc. When I moved to Nashville for college, I was looking for a job and decided that as a tech freak, I wanted a job in comps. For some reason, Best Buy just drew me in.
Honestly, I think it was the fact that the mentality about BBY that this site helped me frame convinced me that I would do well... and I am. Since I was hired, my dept. has jumped from 496 (out of 511 stores) to 79 (as of yesterday) in the company. I just want to thank the old timers here for helping me develop my understanding of technology.
Sadly, I haven't had much time lately to hang around here lately. I know socalgal left a long time ago, and I'm not sure how much MtSnow hangs out here anymore. But I do know that the mentality a lot of us had about stores like best buy was wrong.
People like you and I would most likely not buy a system from Best Buy (although we do sell kick **** alienware systems, as well as our own inhouse brand, VPR Matrix (which is built with no proprietary parts).
For the average joe, Best Buy is a great place to get a system. The Performance Service Plans we offer make sure the people with no know how will always have a system that works, and the salespeople can help an idiot pick out a good system.
Just wanted to drop by quickly and thank ya'll though!
Peace
Personally, I recommend that people purchase a ready-built computer. Most people don't need a custom computer. The seller of such can handle the repairs/upgrades.
I only build for family...and that's immediate family. No cousins.

I wouldn't recommend anyone to buy a brand name pc, complete junk, especially the hewlett packard garbage. Specifically designed to frustrate any worthwhile upgrade.
I take all my "clients" out shopping, i love sending other peoples money. I take them down my local pc shop, get very good service, and just stand there grinning like an idiot unless i hear something I don't like. End result, happy seller and equally happy buyer, no one ripped off and i only have to fix the software when they b*gger it up.
And although I must congratulatre you on getting your store way up that ladder, have you asked yourself why it was so far down before you joined?
Your Best Buy is very similar to our PC World over here, and have I heard some garbage comming out the mouths of some very ignorant sales people. If I'm in the mood I sometimes interupt the sales pitch and ask what make the motherboard is and if it has an agp slot in it. I then tell the poor sods mortgaging themselves up to their neck in it, that if you want to play games, shared video is not necessarily a good option and why don't they buy a comp where you can at least change the vid card to keep pace with technology.
End of Rant. But good luck to you, I'm all for people who know what their talking about getting good jobs in the retail pc market as there plenty of cowboys out there.
Give good service and your customers will come back to you.

Sysopt has a real hot-rodder mentality. Faster is always better. Many people here will justify $400 on a video card! Hey, I'm there, but I know the vast majority of users aren't. They buy one computer every 6 or 7 years, never upgrade and only want it to come on every day.
I'll never buy myself a name brand PC, but when a customer comes to me and asks me to build them something I ask questions first. If it's a time strapped hot-rodder, I'll help them out. If it's a typical user I'll send them to HP/COMPAQ/DELL/GATEWAY.
The OEM philosophy suits the vast majority of computer buyers - warranty, customer support & parts that have been tested together with the OS. They want dependability not all out performance and I don't want the "I think I have a virus" phone calls at 11pm (Dell can get 'em!):)

LOL, agree
the store i go to get my stuff all the time, they keep getting TONs of calls with just all those stupid questions, that you'll expect, but common, when will people learn?
there's just only so much we tech can tolerate when it comes to DUH! questions
it might be fun every now and then but like the same question every 2 or 3 minute?
and for other stupid stuff that are CLEARLY spelled out in the License Agreement in the case of the M$ OS and licensing goes )-|

They won't!:D
The whole drive at M$ and elsewhere is to develop a no-brain system that runs itself. (most) People want a computer that works the same as their fridge (without thinking about it).
I read an article a month or so a go where this guy (a business 'expert') said that IT support would be obselete in 5 years because the systems would be self supporting. What a dream world that guy lives in - he probably suggested that Enron stocks are the next big thing.
The machines get more complicated, the techs get more neccessary. The only time that might change is if the machines start making their own parts and code - and I think we're gonna have to wait more than 5 years for that.
In the meantime, call Dell because the Icon 'disappeared' on your desk top!:r :D ...(did you delete it!, no!, did you highlight it and accidently hit the delete key, yes, did you then say ok? yes...)

I wouldn't completely knock name brand comps. Before building one from scratch a couple months ago I had a nifty Dell from '96. P1 200Mhz and a whopping 64mb of SDRAM. But, that puppy lasted through 4 years of college and 2 years in front of a baseboard radiator. Smokkinnnn.
I agree that most of these guys that work the big chains don't know their stuff but I think its the companies themselves that keep pushing for sales that are the problem. Meaning, the salesman is probably making up some **** b/c he needs to meet the monthly quota or something. I've been in best buy and overheard some guy giving bad advice on a home network setup. So I said "excuse me" and chimed in. Not to show him up, just to make offer "another solution." After it was all over, the sales guy came over and thanked me for lending a hand.
More power to ya! Maybe we can all get a discount now at Best Buy!!!!!! Yippeee :x :x

There's a real need for pre-built PCs out there. Know why? It's because BipolarBill doesn't offer 24hr support! :p
Someone loves themselves ah narcissi – I mean Bill :-@

wow i saw your post just in time for my question.
If I purchase stuffs from Bestbuy.com, will I be able to exchange, return, get service from a best buy STORE, which is like one block away from my house!!!!!! ???????
Why do I purchase online? Because sometimes stuffs only available there and the shipping is free!!!!!
brand name PC's can be such huge rip offs. I saw a systemax for 1700$ that had integrated video!@!!!!!!!! As far as dell goes the Dude guy can goto hell with his 4mb integrated video.
