What I did was to just connect the socket (in wall) to the cable modem. Then, on the cable modem there is a RJ-45 socket (labeled 10/100 on my modem) that you run to your routers socket labeled WAN (Wide Area Network). This sets it up so that you can plug your computers network cables into the router and thus share an internet connection.

Hope this helps.

On a router such as this Linksys BEFSR41 there is a WAN port which you can connect your broadband modem to, as noted by compgeek.

so you can have too comps running off that one line router, how would running the internet off the one line work?

the same, as long as the router is plugged in, i use a hub. and the 'net connection is from our firewall.

You don't need to buy a router... Just make sure that one of the computers has 2 network cards, and the other computer has 1. HAve the broadband going into the computer with 2 NICS and using the other network card in it, connect it directly to the other computer using x over cable. In the network cards properties (the one connected to broadband) you get the option to enable ICS (intenet connection sharing). Enable it to be shared over the other network card. On the other computer just configure it to automatically detect all settings and it should work =) the only draw back with this, is that if you want to use the internet on the other computer that is not connected directly to broadband, the computer that is connected to the broadband has to be on. By the way this will only work if you are using win NT and above...

You want a router/switch NOT just a router, get the one in the picture. A plain router won't connect your PC's together

Cable in wall goes to modem, network cable (cat 5) comes from modem to the router/switch in the port marked 'wan'. Cat 5 line out of numbered ports on router/switch to each PC network card.
(Avoid 'uplink' port)

Then tell each PC to use DHCP ('obtian IP automatically', under TCP/IP properties) and tell each browser to connect by LAN to the internet. ('Connection' tab under internet properties.)

With a little luck you will now surf from each PC automatically. You'll need to follow steps for setting up a LAN to share files between each PC. Each PC must be part of same 'workgroup' and filer and printer sharing needs to be enabled.

Bubbleflaps suggestion also works, that's how I do it too, but it is a little more tricky to set up, lot's more tricky really. You will also NEED to run firewall software on the host PC if you go that route.
The router/switch takes care of that automatically.

For the money the router/switch is a great deal. You won't have to get a hub or an extra network card.

i have two hubs and will be getting a modem (i assume some type of router, im not quite sure because i didnt set it up with the company and dont have the modem info) with my cable internet access.

will i still need to get a separate router/switch? or will i be able to plug my modem into the hubs?

It Cost the same

might as well go for a Router 100% easier to set up, and manage, NO HEADACHE

2 nic = $20 x 2 = $40
1 router = $40

LOL :D

which one will you chose?

router comes with Firewall
2 nic does not have a firewall

it will work

but it'll be WAYYYYY Too expensive

say you have 11 PCs
then you need another 10 IP#
each Extra IP# from most ISP cost an additional $10 A MONTH!!

so 10 x 10 = 100
which mean you'll be spending an Extra $100 every month if you use that setup

which ISP RECOMENTS and SUPPORTS
of course they better, cuz they are charging you $100 extra on top a month for that $30 bucks service

so no way man, is just too dumb to do it that way cuz the ISP will own you in the long run.

10 x10 =100???
well 0x0=0
why would you pay someone for something that is free???
I can hook up as many computers as I want to my network and there's nothing no one can do about it. I guess you have to be 10% smarter than the machine you are operating.
