I have a suggestion: Maybe the moderators could close the threads when the question has been answered or is going way off topic? Just a thought... :)

I think the mods do what they can without becoming "thread police". I'm sure they can't be everywhere at once.

But there is recourse for anyone who has a problem with a particular thread and that is to use the "Report this post to a moderator" highlighted in each post.

There's no reason for things to get out of hand as long as people respect the rights, and feelings, of others.

This is one of a few sites that, I think, does a great job of helping people.

It's a shame to see people leave because of the actions of a tiny minority that feel that they are the only ones that have something of value to say.

Keep coming back because the chaf is eventually winnowed out.

I, for one, need all the help I can get!hehe

:D

Personally I think mods should be very careful when closing threads. Some of the best have been those that go way off topic. Closing someone’s thread can lead to hurt feelings and bad vibes. If a thread started in hardware and goes off topic it should be moved to the Community Forum instead of been closed. I remember almost a year ago to date things at another forum all hell broke loose because the Megalodon Administrator started closing thread because they had gone off topic.

i think they shouldnt close posts at all unless the post is way out of hand!

U kidding me u want them to close every thread after like 2 people reply???

might as well close this thread right now, cause the question has been answered :t

I think the only time a thread should be closed is when somebody get's rude, insulting, or derrogatory towards other members of the community. Otherwise keep em open as you'll tend to get alot of different ways to look at and tackle the multitudes of variying problems that people come here with. I think that way tends to a more information rich environment when people actually use the search tool to solve problems.

Sometimes there's a variety of answers to any given problem. Sometimes I'll get 3 or 4 people that give me answers before someone gives me an answer that works for my particular case. Plus - going off topic is what makes this a community - and not just a tech resource. Sometimes I'll skip past all the unrelated responses - but sometimes they are fun to read. Get to know the forum members - you can learn a lot!

Threads get closed for these reasons.

Or, unless asked to by the person who started the thread.

I believe that there is a board policy about staying on topic. It's not really fair to the thread starter to close their thread because someone 'hijacks' it. Really it would be more appropriate for the mods to contact the 'offender', especially if they make a habit of it, and let them know if their posts are not appropriate. You do raise a good point though, that people should be a bit more considerate of the thread originator by staying on topic. Regarding the other point, about the question being answered, that's very subjective. As already mentioned, there are often alternatives that can be explored and / or support for or arguements against previous answers. Someone might simply answer a question incorrectly or incompletely and follow up answers, although partially redundant, can correct or complete the picture. Most threads fade away gracefully. For those that go off on a tangent, perhaps a mod posting a 'friendly' reminder to stay on topic is better than closing the thread.

And of course mods are appointed from on high and operate in a complete vacuum. Although members don't get to set board policy or determine how the mods 'enforce' those policies, I think it is legit for members to comment on it. Furthermore, I don't appreciate having the bulk of my post summarized by "Blah...Blah". I'm not sure how that reads on your side of the pond, but here it's mildly insulting. I'm not sure if that was your intent or not.

As a “general” rule, the number of closed thread is “almost” directly related to the number of threads that shouldn’t be here a.k.a violate the AUP.

OK, we're cool then. It's only your intent that matters to me at the end of the day.

BTW, a friendly suggestion, you might want to 'take the edge off' by using something other than Blah, Blah when you want to truncate a lengthy quote (I find ... to be more neutral myself).
