Which is faster Geforce 256 or Radeon VE DDR

Would someone be able to tell me which of these cards would be better in performance in games and 3dmark 2001. The Powercolor Geforce 256 SDR version or the Auriga Radeon VE 64meg DDR card.

The Radeon VE is a crippled version of the regular Radeon and is a piece of **** for gaming in my opinion (lacks Charisma engine). It is barely faster than the TnT2u that I tried to replace it with. If ATI ever came up with an "MX" version of any of their cards, the VE would be it.

Do yourself a favor and get the GeForce SDR.

well like nd said the Radeon VE 64meg DDR is faster cause of the ddr ram!

but if you were to get a geforce 256 ddr! then it would be faster than the radeon!

Funny enough, latest ATi drivers show the Radeon VE actually DOES have all the features of the regular Radeon ... it's still slower though, because it has only one rendering pipeline.

Have any of you guys ever had a Radeon VE? I believe ATI repackaged and remarketed the Radeon VE into what is now called the Radeon 7000. They may or may not have made some revisions to the engine, but I doubt it. Just because it uses DDR, does not mean that it's not a still a dog. The fastest memory in the world is useless if the card can't use it to full potential. Hell, don't take my word for it, look at the benchmarks:

Of the two cards mentioned, get the GeForce 256 (a.k.a. SDR).

Yes I did have one (for its dual-CRT-ness, no 3D work on this one). All the rendering features of the original Radeon (aka 7200) are there (earlier drivers crippled the VE aka 7000 further), but half the horsepower. As I said above.

Can't I see? Did you even look at the other benchmarks? The Radeon VE is a piece **** for gaming - period. I had one and it was not worth the upgrade from a TNT2u. I was lucky to get may money back on it.

Even if 3dmark2001se is the only benchmark you use, current benchmarks show that the GeForce SDR blows it away.

Well, OK. I'll concede to that. My Radeon VE did have superior 2d over the Creative GeForce GTS that I replaced it with. And is probably the better choice if you use your computer for DVD playback or need dual display, but other than that, there is no way this card is faster than any regular non-MX GeForce card.

Actually, TNT2 Ultra is FASTER then GeForce256 SDR in some tests :)
Had all the three cards, however quite a long time ago, and gotta second myself once again : Radeon VE aka 7000 IS A MATCH for GeForce256 SDR, and in some cases, such as 32bit color, would be even faster.

Actually I already have the Geforce 256 SDR video card and was looking to upgrade it. Now after looking at the posts here I think that I will not buy a Radeon VE DDR. I will probably just stay with the Geforce 256 until I can buy a Geforce 3/4 or something.

ohhh its a toughie. ive been an ATI fan for many years and still will be, but if you have agming expectations then the 7000 aint for you, but neither is the 256.

Do you have to have one of these cards, i mean why this choice???.

have a look on aussie ebay www.ebay.com.au i saw geforce2mx cards which are better than both for $50 around $25US or £17UK.

Try looking around if you can as i cant reccomend either card as a gamer card. the VE/7000 is great for DVD,Tv-out,2D and light 3d games. But for anything big it has to be geforce2MX400 or up really.
