an AMD K-6 400 processor with a motherboard for $160. I'm wondering where I might find one of those. I'm running an AMD K-6 333, and desperately need an upgrade...problem is, I'm utterly poor and can't afford anything too drastic. Need to keep it under $300. Any suggestions?

How about both for $127.00 + s&h ?
This mobo($77) is good for 100-133mhz FSB, so you can do a little overclocking. The web site don't divulge this info but it's on the included CD.

Here's a AMD K6-2+ ,($50) the plus series are supposed to be good o/c candidates, perhaps 600mhz , maybe 112 fsb x 5.5 = 616mhz

Don't forget a good cooler with the cash you saved.. Maybe a golden orb for $15

If you have an existing video card,, OR can afford a cheap vid card, skip the K6 and go to the Athlon Slot A
Much more performance for very little more money..
Mobo, Biostar M7MKA $42.00 minus 10% if you use a MasterCard->

AMD Athlon 550mhz CPU $64.99

Voodoo5 5500 64MB AGP Video Card Only $137.00 - 10%= $123.30

So, IF your powersupply is a 250+ watt you can get all this for about $250
OH, here's a golden orb for $16 , it's the wildest looking cooler.. I got mine in about 4 days, $3.75 s&h

You can probably run a K6-2 400 in your board for less than $29, but for $160 you could probably buy a Duron 700 and a new motherboard.

What motherboard do you have now? Do you need ISA slots? Do you have PC100 sdram?
I am sure the good doc could find some better prices than I have.
You can get a Duron 650 for $53 and a Abit KT7A mother board for $133 from www.atacom.com (http://www.atacom.com) Don't forget to add $15 or so for a good heat sink/fan combo. +Shipping of course.
Then you may want to add some good memory here. (http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.asp?model=KT7A&x=4&y=14) 64MB SDRAM PC133 CL2 for $32.39 with free shipping. A 128MB stick is only $54.89 and I would recommend getting it instead if you can.
Then you may also need a new power supply and/or case. There are some cheap ones in this thread. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/Forum10/HTML/001169.html
This would give you an affordable and very upgradeable start to an awesome system

WOW!!! What a response!!! Thank you all muchly! I've been seeing AMD 550's for around $500 and thought I was hopelessly lost forever!
(Another note to the fellow before, I only reposted because I was told I posted a technical Q in a community, which was apparently offensive--I thought it would be ok to post here since I couldn't there.K? Can we be friends now?)

I hope of luck with the new system upgrade, as the guys have listed some excellent deals. Whatever vendor you choose to purchase from, be sure to check out there ratings at SysOpt's own Resellerratings:

OK, Robert! Thanks! I feel better now :-)
Also, just to note the Q's before, I have a 333 AMD K-6 processor with an EpOx motherboard EP-51VPXC that supports 2 16bit ISA slots, and 3 32bit PCI slots with 2 PCI IDE interfaces, AWARD Plug n Play BIOS. My video card is (don't cringe!) an S3Virge DX/GX PCI (375/385) 4MB card. (Copied from manual--just so you don't think I really understand all that! LOL!) At any rate, I have PLENTY of places to go shopping now! However, with the new info, I'll still be eager to read more ! Thanks again, can't WAIT to dress up my little metal friend!!!
