First noticed this topic a week ago at Mame World. Apparently, the issue swayed from banning only electronic gambling to ultimately...your gameboy. Check it out.

 And I thought the US had it bad with censorship!

That's surreal. The police are too thick to tell the difference between pac-man and a gambling game, so they ban it all?
This from the country that invented democracy?
These are strange days indeed.

I had already seen that article on another site, wasn't sure if it was true - but now that it's on C|NET - I don't question it. I guess if you wanna play a goot FPS now - you just have to get a REAL gun - probably has less of a punishment than playing it online:P I say we take up a collection and just do like redcross flyovers - dropping packages of video games, consoles, and other gaming equipment! By that definition - even new pinball games would be illegal, since they use electronic mechanisms. Computer industry has been worried about the rapid depreciation of items in their warehouse - make up the difference on the Greek black market:P I could just see if they did that here - we could all take our laptops and hubs - go sit outside congress - and play CS day and night:P

If you can sway people's emotions, you can get them to do almost anything, even if it irrational. It's true anywhere, even in the U.S.

I am! I just MC'd a wedding party of 180 people last month, had them rolling on the floor laughing! I made up a story about how the best man met the groom in a Turkish prison...
A buddy of mine is an MCSE, A+, NET+, blah, blah, blah... and he's one of the best speaker's I've ever met, so I'm not the only one.
I agree with you, habits can stunt you if you let them rule you, but it isn't impossible to do more than one thing at a time. If you balance computers with, say, a nice team activity like full contact ice hockey you can come out nicely balanced (albiet heavily scarred).
I suppose the ultra-maroons who come flying on here and attack other people are the ones that have computers and nothing else... how sad.
"The Way of the Owl" and the "Tao te Ching" (these be books)
Balance is the thing, in hobbies (habits) and especially in government. The Greeks have forgotten this, for shame!

:p I AM! If I am not acting like a punk frat boy at parties, Our friends will ask my Wife and I if I am sick or something. Look, cliches are cliches because they tend to be true: Everything in moderatation.

If the video game manufacturers don't come up with something more origional then kill, kill, kill there will be more countries following suit. If I had kids I think I would steer them away from the head choppers and blood bathers. Moral decay is what destroyed the Roman Empire. I spent 4 months in Greece back in 72 and that is one beautiful country. The people there are very religious and peaceful. I got along great with the locals but I didn't try to push my philosophy on them. They don't want it and don't need it either.

i too am some where in the middleground!
but it is a choice we made remember..

it also a form of entertainment!
how come people complain only about violence in the games,TV..
what about sex?
no one seems to complain about that!

Will not argue with you there Jak. Maybe I only notice the ones who are talking and don't notice the withdrawn ones? I have been called oblivious before....;)
It is WAY to easy to use our virtual gaming world to escape the real world. I spent the first 3 years of college too busy with doom2 and Myst to go to class. Hence, I am graduating next spring one year prior to my 10 year HS reunion. I had to go to the school of hard knocks before I went to the School of engineering.

I agree with needing new games. Personally - some of the FPS games are pretty cool, but they all get old after a while. Nothing has really changed since Duke3d - they've just gotten better graphics and a little better physics. I would say since Wolf3D or Doom - but Duke had more 3d controls - like jumping, ducking, and look around. I like finding new game styles that are totally different - like virtual cow tipping :p

...hardly suprising is it :p
--As giblet says games are a choice.. indeed they are... but liek TV junkies etc, ppl can become severely addicted and this is where the risk of social alienation begins...
...personally i think its up to parents to give the kids a bit of a nudge... but in the world today parents seem to be content with kids doing anything, wether it be smoking dope or playing quake 3 for 6 hours straight -- as long as the kids are out of their hair...

Tightening the political reigns on pre-teens being allowed to purchase adult themed games is what needs to happen. What the heck is the point of a ratings system if parents and retailers pay no attention to them? That's partly the reason why some ignorant parents want to sue a developer right after their son begins showing signs of aggression. I say bring on the heavy subject matter...even make it more realistic for us tax paying ADULTS. After all, adults do make up a nice percentage of gamers out there.

I'd like to see a game where you search the internet for clues to find real treasure. Different sites could sponser different prizes and hide clues on their sites. Member sites could link to other sites that had more clues. You could set it up so that some clues were riddles, some were skill games, and some were trivia, etc. It would be a great marketing tool and would help improve net searching and internet navigating skills along with reading and typing skills. Make the prizes big enough and it could become very addictive. :)

To pacify Tipper Gore and the rest of the Censorship club. Look, you tell me I can't drink until I am 21. I drank more (per session) before I was 21 than I do now. You tell me I can't play violent games, I am going to want to simply because you tell me not to. I know this is going to sound totally crazy, but what about talking with your kid about what is being portrayed in the games? How about having a relationship with them enough to know what games they are playing at your house AND their friend's houses. I found some of my old Comic books in my parents basement a few weeks ago. I can't believe how bloody and violent Punisher and Wolverine were! I can't believe my Dad had no clue how violent they were! I haven't killed anyone, YET!:p

Ignorant parents want to sue developers make me sick. Take responsibility for being a parent. Parenting is a 24/7 responsibility, not a "when it's convinient" responsibility.
That Ashley Pond and Miranda Gaddis event has more to it than anyone outside of Portland knows. Police sources were quoted as saying "these people make white trash look bad." The Girls mothers BOTH have been actively dating sex offenders, Miranda's mother attended a hearing for her sex offender boyfriend after her daughter disappeared. These "Mothers" brought garbage around their kids, men who were accused of sexually assulting each girl and their siblings. No wonder their gaurd was down when the Psycho who killed them was on the prowl. A friend of mine, her twin sister, and her 12 year old sister were sexually assaulted by her mothers boyfriend. Mommy was confronted with this, AND DIDN'T BELIEVE HER KIDS! Thanks to my friend telling her Dad, Boyfriend is in Jail. However, Mom still keeps in touch with him. And she still calls herself a Mother.

Problem is - although computer gaming is now a more widespread hobby/ entertainment source... its still majorly the preserve of children and teenagers... therefore why would publishers voluntairlily give a game say an 18 rating... thus cutting out the predominant part of their buying market...
It SHOULD happen... but due to the money men - restriction of game content - DOESNT happen enough...

Thats my point it percieved as a kids industry by the masses.. as kids have the time to plough into games... i know adult gamers and although 20-30 suminks are regular players... people like y dad in their 40's will maybe play for two or three hours a week... therefore due to the time availiable to kids, these games are an ideal pursuit... which is why a large number of PROFITABLE games are marketed at kids... especially through consoles...

I don't know - if you're the only girl around with the ability to think - you might have to get a license to carry to defend yourself from all the guys. Then again - there are a lot that want the ditz's too. I don't know why- nothing drives me nuts worse than a girl without an opinion. "What would YOU like to do for your birthday"
"I dunno *giggle giggle giggle*"
What's up with that? I know for a fact girls ALWAYS have an opinion - or maybe that's just because I tend to hang around the ones with an IQ over 60
