I had 2 hard drives, (1) 10 gig and (1) 40 gig. I tried removing the 10 gig so I would have just the (1) 40 gig but now my computer won't recognize it. The 40 gig is a Maxtor hard drive. I've check cables, reseated just about everything but still no luck. Is there anything else I could try? I'd like to reformat this hard drive so I can get Windows XP running. I've also updated the bios. If any body has suggestions I would really appreciate it.

Thanks!

The obvious thing first is to make sure the jumpers are set for master on the drive. The jumper configuration is printed on the top of the drive. Make sure the jumper is set to master w/no slave. Also make sure you have an ultra DMA cable and use the end socket to hook to the Maxtor.

Thanks for the welcome!

I've set the jumpers to master & tried all the basics. Do I have to set the BIOS or anything like that? I hear the HD spinning, so what could it be? Is there a utility to check if the HD is damaged?

connect the cables to make the hard drive a primary master!
and try settin the jumpers in the harddrive to

master or single device

You tried using a different ATA/IDE socket and a different IDE cable yet??

...if the things spinning up it would suggest powers getting to it okay - so theres one thing less to worry about...

Funny, we had a thread here recently working out the same problem.

Check the jumpers, make sure they're set correctly.

If you have nothing valuable on the 40 gb drive, hook up the drives the same way you had them before with the 10 gb in with the 40 gb. Wipe out all the partitions on the 40 gb drive and power off. Put the 40 gb as master, and see if it will now show up. Partition the drive with a bootdisk and proceed with your install of winxp. Or let the winxp installation partition the drive.

OK guys....the BIOS is reading it as a master! I've booted from a XP cd. I've deleted the single partition & created another (1) single partion again. File system....the only option I get is NTFS. Then its ready to format & so far it does nothing. How do you clear the CMOS?

Never mind....I guess I just needed a little patients. It finally started formatting.

Thanks for all your suggestions!
