I have a couple of 220V fans on my case that at the moment have external power. I just got a 550W PSU and I wonder how I can connect these fans so that they're powered from the PSU and switch on/off whenever the PSU/PC does the same.

Thaks in advance

On the external power supply you will have a three wire connector,
Black wire - "hot"
White wire - "neutral"
Green wire - "ground"
I am assuming that you have a power supply inside the case to power the computer.
Remove the black wire from the connector of the external power supply and then plug the conncector back into the supply. Now you need to connect the black wire to the output terminal, terminal that goes to the other power supply, of the main power on switch. This will send power to the power supply only when the main power on switch is engaged.
If this is confusing send me an email.

I am not sure I followed you though. I cannot see how the fans will start and shut with the PSU.

I'll read it a few more times (lol)

Thanks.

Your idea sounds great, but I lack all the knowledge and really didn't understand how I can do it.

And to think I took 2 semesters of electrical engineering in my degree....

If you can be a little more bothered a more detailed explanation would help. If you think I'm a lost cause... well I don't blame you. lol

advice taken, thank you!

I'll get one of the electrical engineers' dept next door to help me out.

Thanks for the warnings!
