Hello,

I have an old Gateway Pentium 100 MHz, w/16 EDO RAM (Intel MB) and wonder if it is worth to give it a face lift or it is just good to throw it away. The machine will be use mainly as a backup machine (in case I have some problem with my Pentium II 266 MHz, I can get online and ask for help). I am thinking of buying a Pentium 200 MHz or a Pentium Pro 200 Mhz w/256K L2 CACHE (about the same price) and plug it right in. If it works, I will spend another $100 for RAM and modem, otherwise I lose about $50. Does anyone have a better idea?

Any suggestion and help would be greatly appreciated.

First, you might just need a new mother board for a pentium 200, and you would for sure with a Pentium Pro. How about this: get one of those AT p2 motherboards for like $75, get a C400A and a slotkit, and $35 of ram (64mb). You also might be able to get a slot 1 300A at http://www.ebay.com , get it guaranteed 450mhz @ 2.0v, cut/tape pin B21 on that new board, and have a full scale 450mhz system! What you have that might be worth keeping: hard drive, disk drive, CD-Rom drive, video, case. I will take the Pentium 100 off your hands if you want a few $ (I am a colector of computers, I have 4 486 systems!).
