ECC RDRAM vs non ECC

Is ECC RDRAM compatible with non ECC RDRAM ? Does ECC slow down performance? Is there a realistic different between PC600 and PC800 RDRAM? What is the procedure for upgrading RDRAM ? Do they have to be in pairs ? Do you need to stick something into the unused sots (i have a faint memory of reading that somewhere)? Basically, what's this new RDRAM creature?
