XP upates..

Is there anyway to backup just my updates so I dont have to DL m again? and is there any way to reinstall them afterwards?

I imagine MS will probably make them available on a cd when sp1 comes out soon, might just wait for that and save yourself the trouble or you could try d/l them separately HERE (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=%2fsupport%2fservicepacks%2fwind ows%2fxp%2fpre-sp1_hotfixes.asp%3fSD%3dGN%26LN%3den-us) send them to a folder you can find or maybe look in the windows/temp folder before you restart see if you can save them from there, try just one see what happens.

I think you'll find it increasingly more difficult to download any MS patch as an individual installable file. MS will want to ransack your pc first with "automatic update" to see if you are a legit customer or not. No seperate file downloads makes it harder for you to use cracked copeis of their software.

If they do find cracked copies, they will be able to disable them from Gestapo hQ. leastways, thats what they would like to be able do.

I don't have a gripe against this in theory, as long as I can get my money back for buying bug ridden code and sue them each time their flimsy security gets breached and I have to patch it anyway.

Geesh, so worried about people copying their software they forget to fix it first.

My understanding is XP's SP1 will have all the updates, that will be available for download on Sept. 7th.

To download updates to a "basket", use the "Customize Windows Update" link on the left. Include a "Catalog" link on your page and use it. You'll see what I mean. ;)

well, the problem is that my IBM deskstar (this will the 3rd time replaced) is dieing.. I dont mind reinstalling XP but due to the fact I have dial up id rather not have to dload again. as the picture show the list is becoming rediculusly long which = long download time.. if its not possible I will take bills idea and do it that way..

if you wait a little bit, you can probably get SP1 off a PC mag cover CD. Something like PC Format/Computer Shopper is bound to have it in next month's issue, the month after that at the latest.

Most of his links (xp ones anyway) take you back to www.microsoft.com it would be really nice if the updates really could be obtained from another source.

That would be great, but bandwidth is expensive. Let Micro$oft provide the bandwidth and go to the axcel216 link I gave and you won't have to wade aimlessly through M$'s site.

Yes you can download and save them all, but you'll still need to re-install them either ways if you need to reinstall WinXP

right, but the thing is I all ready have them installed . are they stored in a folder that I can just rip and reinstall them later? or , if I am right.. the install is automated by XP therefore ripping the files would be of no use as I have no way to install them..

Nope

they go ALL over the place after you install them

that means the entire Windoze directory

and that means that you have to re-install them regardless

say you installed wiiindoze then you copy and paste your back up over
it wont work since many files are in use
and the Registry is not update that way

Windoze will not let you Export the Full registry.

so nope, no easy way.

simples is to download them all have them in 1 dir then reinstall them all afte ryou install or fix windoze :t
