Hey all,

Was woundering what the CD burning speed is based off of. I'm assuming it's the manufactuers theoretical limit on the CD burn speed (i.e. 40X max) But when I burn CD's through Roxio it shows the burn speed never goes anywhere above 25X or so. I'm using 40X compatible disks...here's system:

Abit KT7A mobo
950 Mhz TB
1 GB PC133 ram
60GB WD HD 7200rpm
1.44" Floppy
ATI Radeon 7500
Samsung 40/12/40 Drive

Any suggestions on what i can upgrade/OC to get a higher burn speed or is it all for naught. Thanks in advance.

Just out of curiosity, what software came bundled with the burner, and how does it perform?

Check to see if DMA is enabled for your CD-RW. Also, try downloading the latest patch for the Roxio program. However, like everyone's been saying, Nero is a better program.

My friend just paid $90 for Roxio for his 12x cdrw! Boy was he peeved when I told him I just bought a 32x 12x 40x Liteon with bundled Nero for $55. It does indeed burn at 32x with Nero and he was still trying to get the Roxio to work right last time I talked to him.

Got both and for ease of function and not screwing up discs every other time you use it, Nero is the king...

with Eazy CD Creator i used to get sooooooo many coaster, but they all gone away after i switch to NERO.

with CDRwin i seldomly get coasters too, so that's why i like Nero Best

CRRwin is good for Ripping though, very good reading software. ;)

ROFL - I go out and play fetch with the neighbors weinerdog when I have a frisbee burn.

That and spare AOL Discs. Gonna go skeet shooting with those :D

As for that, I just bought an OptoRite 40x12x40 CD burner that came bundled with Nero. At first I thought it was busted cause whenever I'd try to burn with Nero it'd spit the tray out then stop responding to stimulus altogether (Eg: front button press, software commands, etc..) and would require a reboot to get the thing to eat the tray again

Found out I had UDMA on in the BIOS for my second IDE channel, turned it off, works nicely now...Nero is Schweeet. I hate Roxio with a passion.

Blah, get Nero! :)

I can't understand why you talk so bad about Roxio...
Works better for me than Nero for sure!
Are you sure that you know how to configure a computer to burn cd's?
Because, I have a RAID 0 system just for "cache" and Roxio is swifter and faster than Nero!

Roxio just EATS CD's

...also its fancy graphical wizadry font end results in being hardly able to multitask whilst burning without cauaing it or another program to stop responding.... :(

Do you PLAY UT while burning CD's and checking mail in a PIII machine?

No one seems to be mentioning how much Roxio messes up yer system. Seems Roxio doesn't like playing nice with other burner software (other software can do that too, tho) and definately not with nero. All I have had are problems with Roxio (EZCD), even when ya get it to function properly. I just don't like programs playing in the system folders when they don't have to.

I used to use a nice lil proggy called Prassi. That lil program was 4 files and all in it's own folder. didn't touch the system. I miss simplicity......

No - although checking your email and browsing the net shouldnt cause programs to close.. .and its not a P3 i'll have you know...

Question for you BIG, Are you P***ING about with the settings in Roxio and that's why you've lost so many?
If not there most be something your doing.
Or maybe getting a better more reliable CDRW or better CDs.
Just a thought.

I also like Nero, but I have ROXIO and I've never lost any of the CDs I have used.(unable to say how many I have done with roxio)
But all the same I think Roxio is a good utility to use.
I will continue to use it for longtime to come

;) :x :p

No im not wiz...

Roxio is just too clunky and slow due to all the fancy stuff for me... its also less functional IMO... if you want it to look good go for Roxio... if you want it to work.. go nero...

Hehe, I like that comment 'Are you sure you even know how to set up a computer to burn CDs?'

Not many people think of it this way, but most CDRW drivers run independently of software and hardware. They have their own Firmware, their own Cache Buffers, and most scale tests show that any burning taking place is only initiated by a few commands from a program.

Roxio seems to not like this idea and tries to force the hardware to do things its not really capable of. 'All those settings' that Roxio set up are likely not even compatible with a majority of CDRW/CDR drivers. Hence even a baseline setup could mess it up nicely.

Nero is a hands off approach. It gives the CDRW the info to burn, and tells it to burn it. One of the reason it runs better on most computers/burners

Heck, I'd even prefer NTI CdMaker over Roxio and Nero, just because it works with UltraDMA Enabled and Nero won't. Its just got an ugly UI :P

Ohwell, just some food for thought

CompGeek01
09-06-2002, 11:23 PM
heck, i just raced Nero and the WinXP burning and Nero won by 15 whole seconds!

Dracas
09-07-2002, 06:44 AM
Thats because if you look carefully enough, WinXP was only made to support a 32x Burn mode

That really tears me, why 32x? I have a 40x write, what about the folks with a 48x write? What was MS thinking, as I'm pretty sure they knew about 40x ~ 48x back then.

Therefor, it won't use the max potential as Nero will. Also, WinXP won't always write correctly, especially when using the CD Copy feature and if it detects a copyright laserlok/etc.. cd.

With Nero I didn't notice this problem, think they did that on purpose?

I prefer Nero because of features and ease of use

Easy CD Creator's wording is confusing to me which cost me a few coasters, (I say a few because I only tried making 4 cds with it)
