Hey everyone, I'm just wondering how much 8x AGP is supposed to improve game graphics/speed (ie. frame rate) if at all as opposed to 4x AGP. I'm wondering because I am thinking of getting a mobo that supports 8x AGP for my new computer. Should I? Is it worth it? Any and all comments are much appriciated.
Thanx,

If your in the market for a new mobo 8x suport dont hurt. But I wouldnt go outta my way for it. Heck you wont need it for a while and the mobo will be 1 year old and outdated by then anyhow. Theres what one maybe two cards that support it and a handfull of mobo's. Besides there is next to no gain in 4x vs. 2x so why is 8x supposed to be king? I heard unless your running higher than 32bit (which none of us are right now) it doesnt do much of anything. Anybody else got comments on 8x....?

it does not depend only on 4x or 8x..
it also depends on the card..
take the ati9700... it is wasy too fast as is faster than the ti4600.
then you have the sis xabre400 which also supports agp 8x. but this card cant even outperform a gf4mx!!

I don't think it will improve the performance of the GAME ITSELF. But the games will load faster.
Why do I think so? Because all less or more up-to-date GPUs have at least 64MB RAM onboard. That's twice more than enough for textures, so the AGP will be used only to transfer them be4 the game starts (loading...), and will not be used for texture transfer while we play.

It'll improve grapohics card speed slightly but not tremendously, like the difference between 2x and 4x which isnt exactly amazing...
Still wouldnt hurt to have the capability to use it i guess...

heck, going from 1 GB/s transfer in AGP 4x to .... 2GB/s in AGP 8x can't hurt

you need a good card to take full advantage of 8x!

Grimfandango, that vid card is ****. You can't judge how much more improvement 8x agp is going to have over 4x with only one card and one game. The biggest factor in that equation was that the mobo may have been 8x compliant, but it probably doesn't have the bandwidth to make use of all of that 8x agp.
Wait for a few more tests including other more powerful vid cards and mobos and more games.
Doom III should be a good test as to whether or not it will be worth it.

All im saying is dont expect too much, i mean look at teh differ3ence between 2x and 4x AGP, supposedly twice as fast, in 3dmark 2001 the only difference between the two is a couple of hundred marks... dont be suprised if AGP 8x is exactly the same in relation to 4x if you ask me...

dont get me wrong....
it does depend on the card as well!!

True - the card in that bench is cr@p, dont be impressed by the AGP 8x support...
