I love it when you get performance for free!
I upgraded (rather than modified) my trusty A7V to full RAID 0/1/0=1 (with crazy ape's help). Dead simple! Got those two 20G Fujitsus from the box of oblivion, hooked them up and woaaa!!
these are UDMA2 (33MB/s) 5400r drives, with susteained rates of 14MB/s max, 8MB/s min.
On RAID 0 setting with 16K, I get max sustained 26MB/s and min 16MB/s, max burst 44MB/s.
At a total of 40G this setup runs almost as fast as my Quantum LM+ (hold the access time). Real life of course is not as fast as benchmarks, but these two drives were about to be sold, and my GXP75 IBM can live happily on the onboard ATA66 controller with no performance loss.
I think this is what RAID0 is good for, giving life back to old drives!
BTW, the mod (sorry, upgrade) is really easy and 100% safe and it works.
