Does anyone know of a good program that will search a hard drive for all duplicate files and display the details (time and date stamp) so the older dup can be deleted?

Buji 08-29-2002, 07:54 PM The File Tool -Find duplicate, zero length files, temp files and broken shortcuts easily -Extract information from executable files, from mp3 files and form images....... http://www.vtoy.fi/jv16/shtml/powertools.shtml rmanet 08-30-2002, 09:25 AM I'd still be careful deleting duplicate files - I think regcleaner and even the disk cleaner MS uses show duplicate files but sometimes they're needed in more than one folder - you could end up with an app not working, or other problems later on if you're trying to make room on the HDD, just do the usual stuff - temp files (except that if you're in word, etc sometimes they'll keep a tmp file that you need), temp internet files cache, etc. do a freeware search, there's safe programs all over the place (HDValet for win98 and earlier, others for later OS) to download and use Cpl_Squirrel 08-30-2002, 11:25 AM I especially wouldn't go around deleting duplicate .dlls Be careful out there. :) JonathanB 08-30-2002, 07:56 PM Easy Cleaner (http://www.toniarts.com/ecleane.htm). It has a backup option. Leave it there in the backup folder for several months before deciding to delete it. You can also put it to a floppy. I have even used the duplicate *dll function of Norton Systemworks and Find Orphans ( http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,4149,71536,00.asp ) wja777 09-04-2002, 05:56 PM Thanks for the info. Not looking for hd space, just trying to clean up some data files that have come from my laptop, home computer and work computer. I have a couple of directories that are storing a lot of the same information, but I wanted to make sure that I kept the newest files before deleting. Thought there may be a program out there that could help with this. I will look at the programs suggested...... AllGamer 09-04-2002, 06:17 PM i never trust those programs i've tried soooo many of them all of them has flaws so after getting tired of trying them all out i decided to do it myself and F3 windows find will do that just good. :D those programs just always removed files that were actually needed, so i gave up  JonathanB 09-05-2002, 12:50 AM There are differing experiences on third party softwares like these. I have use and re-used Easy Cleaner, Norton Systemworks, and Find Orphans for a year without problems. But these are not 100% fail-free just like microsoft itself. Backup... backup... SysOpt.com
