I've just found an old 486 motherboard and I'm feeling in a destructive mood. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif
What's the best way to (safely) smoke it without resorting to a hammer and chisel?
Oh and there's an ATX PSU thats looking at me funny as well.

You could always light a match, make it a hot dinner.. maybe you could use it to cook something?? (probably stinks.. most likely would!)

No, I'd rather do it stealthily rather than blatantly.
Is there anyway to wreck one without making it obvious?

Hmmm... a good jolt of static electricity to the BIOS chip should do the trick. Those piezo-electric gas igniters will give a few kV, but better still, an 80kV stun gun or a professional insulation tester (these are good fun http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif)
EDIT: a home-made high voltage generator can be constructed quite easily (double the fun).
I made one from a battery, a transformer, a diode, a relay, a motorbike ignition coil and a condensor. (misguided childhood, you see http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif)
Mine generated an estimated 80+ kV (judging by the length of the spark and assuming air has a dielectric strength of 20 kV/cm).
Pratting around with these voltages is not too clever and I've known of people that have been killed by car ignition voltages, so don't do it kiddies.

Now that's more like it! So what do I do? Pull the chip out and give it a few 'clicks'??
Any inventive ways of wrecking an mATX PSU. Need something more inventive than a bucket of water!
I'm not this destructive most of the time. Don't worry! http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Does it fit inside a microwave oven? A friend and me once toasted a P-II 400 (fully functional) like that - we put it in a glass of water and gave it a few seconds at max power... oh yeah - it wasn't our chip...

Just standing on a nylon carpet, wearing plastic-soled shoes and pulling the BIOS chip may be enough, but to make sure, pull the chip and give the pins a good zapping.
You could also try downloading the BIOS flash upgrade utility and pulling the plug (mains power) halfway through erasing the BIOS - they don't like having half a BIOS!!!
Sprinkle iron filings on the motherboard whilst it's powered up.... this may leave burn marks though. Perhaps a little water to help things along?
Swap a few of the power leads to the motherboard (this may well knacker the power supply, too). See how it gets on with +12V when it's only expecting +5.
Trouble with switch-mode power supplies is that they tend to 'stall' if you draw too much current, so you may have a job overloading the thing - transformer-based ones are far easier to overload.
Do you have a shotgun?

Gee I've got a bottle of PCB etching solution and a squirt-gun.
Are there any posibilitys of overclocking????Maybe push it to where it wont fully post and restarts before its done with startup? That would be fun you could start a pool on when it frys. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif

3 seconds on HI in a microwave oven
wanna fry the psu..... run 110v thru the 12v or 5v side. wanna kill everything else, run 110v thru the board.
