First here is my setup:

ASUS A7V
T-Bird 1400
512 RAM
300W PS

I keep the thing running 24/7 and I came home from work and noticed the monitor was blinking like it does when the comp is off, the lights on the case were flashing also. I turned the power off, waited a few and pushed the button to turn it back on and got zip.

I opened it up a noticed my HS was hanging by only one clip, the other tab on the mobo was broken off (think kids knocked it over and won't fess up). Also noticed there was some light burn marks on top of the chip. Uplugged power cord, removed the chip checking for any cracks or chips but didn't find any and put it back in. I layed the comp on its side and just set the HS on top of the chip, plugged power cord back in and immediately got the green light on the mobo, pushed the power button and the fan on the HS spun for a split second, the lights on the front of the comp came on and went out.

Can get the same results each time I unplug the power cord and let it set for a few seconds. I pulled the T-Bird 1400 and replaced it with a T-Bird 850 I know is good but got the same results. Any ideas?

Sounds like you nay have cooked the mobo. Check the capacitors on the mobo and see if any of them are bulging. My partner just went through this with an Abit board (different circumstances, same symptoms). Good luck.

Did you u uplug anything when changing the chips?

I had the same problem with my abit kr7a when I first installed it. Originally I thought I had short circuited or broken the motherboard but I took everything out and reinstalled it again and it worked fine, I'm still clueless on what the problem was.

But I'm guessing I shorted something out by plugging or not plugging in somehthing although I check several times. Don't know if this helps any but the simptoms are the same.

but like thxmanu said it soulds like you fried or shorted something out on you motherboad.

First of all check by using a multimeter or vom meter and make sure you are getting your 120 volts ac if you are from the US I think if you are in Europe well then you have to make sure you are getting 220volts ac. If your source of power is good then proceed to check your DC VOLTAGES coming from your supply make sure you are getting your 5+ Volts DC your 3.3+ volts Dc and your 12 volts DC. If you are getting good readings. Then proceed to remove your motherboard from the case and hook it up free from a static environment and replugging your powersource and it may be that your motherboard is shorting out or a device might be the cause in your motherboard . If you do all these test and still to no avail well then your motherboard would be consider defective..
:(

Use your manual to guide you and if you dont have a manual click here to get your manual online http://cgi.asus.com.tw/cgi-bin/dl.asp?filename=mb/socka/kt266/a7v266/a7v266-105.pdf

:)

Keep us posted if you were successful in finding the problem thanks :t

Same thing happened to me, the hs clip tab on the mobo broke off and the hs falls off. It only took 5 seconds to overheat my 1.4 tbird. Toast. my mobo was ok, but with a amd, it only takes a few seconds to fry the cpu. sorry my friend, time for a new processor.:(

The CPU is definitely toast. Get a new one. The motherboard may have been damaged too. Try the CPU first - you won't hurt the new chip if the mobo went south so don't sweat that.

You can get a heat sink that uses all 6 mounting points here:

There's an old saying:

"If you don't have anything good to say, say nothing".

That applies to the post that I deleted. The only abusive person I see around here is you, absalom. You post spam (using other's bandwidth and storage space) and you triple-post where editing and adding will do - artificially increasing your post count. If you think I'm power-mad, go to Community and post a poll on whether I am or not. I won't interfere.

My contribution to this thread comes from real experience. The CPU is dead - guaranteed. I did miss the mention on the swap-out CPU test. So I guess he needs both. The six-point Thermalright mount will prevent this from happening again. That gives me a total of 66% correct on the reply. Not a bad average, eh?

What was that?

I've earned my stripes here, absalom. Any credits you might have earned have all been lost.

Whoa - i look at this post via an inquisitive nature regarding the title to see if i can offer any help and end up looking at an argy... please guys... as the song goes "make hay not war"...

"Cant we all just... get along?"

ANYWAYS!! :)

Any luck with the suggestions provided then slang ??

IMO the CPU is gone is it has burn marks on it, although out of interest does the PSU fan still spin in order to eliminate fault PSU here, if not its possible the PSU is dead, although check your power cable fuse too before blaming the PSU...

The fact that the 850 didnt work also worries me...as that would point more toward a knackered mobo as well as im afriad.

For future reference dont be scared to give theose heatsinks a bit of a push, they NEED all of that pressure in order to maintain good contact with the CPU, so dont be over cautions, make sure its always SECURELY strapped on...

Good luck

Thanks for all the help guys. Tried everyting suggested and determined the board and chip are in a better place now. Caught the local computer show and picked up the MSI KT3 Ultra 2, XP 2.0 and the Volcano 7 all for $217. Seems to be a great little board so far. Again thanks for all the help, this is a great resource.:)
