How is it that drive/file recovery software running under Windows can access my D: drive but not Windows 98 itself, nor now Norton?

Here’s what happen . . . OK, I goofed a bit here. Installing a DVD drive, I put it on my secondary controller along with my 2nd HD. Only after a few reboots, did I realize I forgot to make the DVD a slave. For some reason, the FAT and some data on the HD became damaged.

The drive was still represented in Windows but the directories and files had garbled names. So I ran Norton Disk Doctor; and it tried to fix things. Well, after that, Windows would not access the drive. Dammmm.

Won’t get into why I hadn’t backed-up this drive yet, but it became time to look into either a disk recovery service, or find recovery software. So, price being one of the main guiding factors, I decided to go for Easy Recovery Personal Edition. It IS easy and pretty neat at $89. BTW, I first tried the trial version, so I knew that it would be able to be access the problem drive.

Though, I thought all along (based on the trial version) that with damage done, I may not be able to recover all of the data. I decided to first let the recovery software do its thing, then, run the ‘undo’ feature of Norton Disk doctor (to return the drive to the ‘original’ stage of damaged, and after that, see if Easy Recovery could do a more complete job.

Well, unfortunately, but as expected, the recovery software could not recover 100% of everything – but it did an admirable percentage of the job (having most problems with the mp3 files). But aarrggghhh, Norton will not access that drive! What’s up with that? BTW, I tried Norton Undo under DOS but to no avail.

I know this - NDD tries to ‘fix’ the drive/files while the recovery software just reads the drive then places the files onto some other storage media (in this case, my C: drive). Windows/Norton also rely on a good FAT . . . ?

Wanting to try to get closer to 100% of data recovered, I’m asking for any ideas or explanations.

Thanks!
