I don't buy into ANY schemes, I've had 3 credit cards in the last 10 years, so I don't take them lightly.

This is IMPORTANT for those who buy online, please review..

It's actually a good enough service, I've only used a backup once in 60 days!

No Credit for Net Porn

American Express says it will no longer cover transactions from adult sites that offer digital content. Is it good business or discrimination?

By CyberCrime staff
February 23, 2001

"American Express' decision was a business decision," says Joanne Fisher, public relations director at the company. "It was not a moral decision. It was based on the unacceptably high levels of customer disputes in this industry."

Those disputes are called charge-backs. They occur when a customer takes issue with a charge that appears on his or her bill and calls the credit card company to have the charge removed.

"With digital adult content, it's difficult for merchants to prove that the goods were sent and received, because they are not receiving a signature," Fisher explains. "In the bricks-and-mortar world, or when you're shipping physical goods from the Internet, merchants [can] check the billing address against the shipping address to secure a signature. They've got proof that the goods were delivered."

On many adult sites, consumers purchase intangibles such as online memberships. When these types of charges are disputed, the bank or credit card company often ends up absorbing the cost.

"We incur high administrative costs because we act as the go-between [between] our card members and the merchants," Fisher says.

This from their FAQs:

"Are there banner ad’s or pop- up advertising with the AmexOL.net product?

With AmexOL.net the advertising "pop-ups" are required when you are on the Internet. What is unique about the AmexOL.net pop-up ads (and logo) is that they disappear whenever you are typing an email, or doing anything else involving keystrokes or mouse clicks. The banner is very unobtrusive compared with other free Internet services."

I guess the short-lived days of free ISPs that used no banners or advertising are over. And since American Express tries to be a classy company, you'd expect their obnoxious advertising to be "very unobtrusive," if you compared them to K-Mart. It's all in the Marketing, eh?
