Netscape browsers have continued to lose market share at a steady clip, falling to a new low of 3.4 percent as of this week, according to new figures.
A twice-yearly survey from StatMarket, a division of analyst WebSideStory, showed that despite recent technological advances AOL Time Warner's Netscape browsers, which use technology from the open-source Mozilla project, have ceded more ground to Microsoft's Internet Explorer. A year ago, Netscape's market share stood at 13 percent, but fell steeply to 7 percent by March, as IE 6 gained popularity.
IE has now reached 96 percent market penetration, according to StatMarket, up from 87 percent a year ago. Mozilla gained some market share when it finally reached a 1.0 release earlier this year, but browsers such as Mozilla and Opera still only accounted for less than 1 percent of the market, StatMarket said.
"The newest versions of Netscape have failed to win over users so far," said Geoff Johnston, vice president of product marketing for StatMarket, in a statement. "Unless AOL makes a move soon, Netscape may find itself battling Opera for the last 1 to 2 percent of the market."

*Ouch!*
96 percent IE? I must be one of those other 4 percent. :p
I remember using Netscape version 1.2 way back in the day.

If AOL switches over to Netscape in their next release, IE will lose what? Like 40% of it's market share?
Sure
Like AOL users are 40% of ALL the people who use Internet.
Aha  :)
With IE since v5. NS before :)

There are well over 30-35 million AOL users I believe....

We'll have to see what happens if aol does use it intead of IE and see how the rest of the world adapts to it but it would take some time since aol 7 is all over the place with IE but even a slow growth would be significant over time if it keeps growing which will be interesting.
Imagine a world full of netscape questions instead of IE, can't wait.:) Still use 4.77 and can probably count on one hand how many times a year I use IE.

I think that Netscape keeps adding more and more unneccessary features with each new release/version... IE6 has maintained fast performance with a fair minimum of features...

your kidding?
Netscape hasn't done anything much for years now.
what everybody sees now in days as Netscape 6.x 7.x etc
it's in reality Mozilla
i used to be a loyal fan to Netscape until they stopeed making its own Netscape 4.8x way back a few years ago.
after i found out the code was really Mozilla i just decided to stay with the real thing Mozilla. and i've been a happy camper since then.
as for the Features, they did indeed have added a whole bunch of new and USEFUL features that i can't live without, just too nice, fast and convenient.
:D :t
if IE newbies ain't scare of the switch and give Mozilla / Netscape a real good try they will all the nice things that IE can't do.
of course there's Always Opera with almost the same array of features.
Just lots of annoying ADs with Opera.
:p

And what's worse...they add all their bloat yet don't take advantage of mozilla's handy pop-up blocking feature? Looks like they deserve to lose market share. :D

I, too, can count on one hand the number of times I've used IE in a year. None of those times on my own computers. I stopped using IE at version 3, and I only used it when I was making web pages and wanted to see how they'd look on each browser.

Well, Netscape has gone to **** since AOL got hold of them, tried 6 and 7 they were slow, cumbersome, and crashed alot. Stayed with NS 4.79 for a while, but got tired of it's instability as well. I hate IE,, for so many reasons, tried Opera, and it's got a few glitches, (didn't show some html right and I hate the ads) So I tried Mozilla 1.0,, Now I'm a happy camper:x
For all I care, Netscape and AOHell can go away, out, gone, done,, they suck, always have:r

I have a dual boot XP and RH7.3 with KDE 3.0 and Mozilla 1.0. I can say for sure that the RH with Mozilla drag-*** compare to XP and IE6.

I'm curious...how do you manage to do your windows updates without dialing into the mothership on Mothership Explorer? ;)

The ONLY reasons I use IE are for windows updates and to upload pics to msn photos, it won't go otherwise,
Other than that,, it's Mozilla,, IE has too much spyware capabilities for me:r
