Although... I did updink the firmware on my TDK 40x12x48 and it seems it has been stuck on PIO mode ever since. It shows up that way on both Win98se and WinXP (dual-boot), and is set to secondary master. Secondary slave (dvd drive) and primary master HDD are both set to DMA 2 and UDMA 5 respectively. Updoinking the firmware shouldn't have much to do with this issue... or no?? I mean YES?? I'm a little stumped as I've done a complete anal-probe of my my system but can't seem to find an answer... ANYBODY have any suggestions??? Thanx in advance!

Where are you seeing that it's in PIO mode? BIOS? What shows in Device Manager?

Some CDR drives have a second set of jumpers where you can set modes. Take a look out back. ;)

It was PIO in device manager, DMA in the BIOS. But, I just now re-installed the secondary ide channel driver and whaddaya know... it's back to UDMA 2. I feel like an idiot flaggin for help like a six-year old lost in a department store :D

Without these little MS sidetrips, SysOpt would be a lonely place, would it not?

Indeed. Indeed. Now that I've reached Cable-Nirvana as of today, I feel like I did as a kid after my first big O... can't get enough of it. Thankfully I'm off Tuesdays/Wednesdays so I can indulge myself full blast. Man, this 100.0 Mbps is AWESOME... well, I went off on a tangent here. Anyway, keep up the good work, Bill. You've helped me out alot the past 10 months!:-@

no tangent here

I did the cable and networking thing for me and my kids - it's amazing how much more you can do, and the smart guys on these forums can, therefore, answer more postings :)

and it won't be the first time using one ide v. the other and/or cabling drives differently did the trick - some mobos are absolutely weird that way, and I check the jumpers (like Bill said), cabling and the IDE thing before I ever screw with firmware upgrades, unless they're gonna give me some real improvement on a burner
