Hello,
Thank you for taking the time to read this message.
A friend of mine recently installed a new 40GB Western Digital HDD. The Western Digital Installation disk was used. He installed Windows 98 and had a problem with the Windows 98 opening screen locking up and it would not go to the desktop.
I took the computer home and found that Windows 98 was not completely installed. I got it to go to the desktop but I could not access the CD-ROM. On a black DOS looking screen before Windows would even start to boot up I would see a message that the Registry or System.ini could not find some device that was not present and finally something about vnetbios.vxd . I would hit enter and windows would do it's thing and boot to the desktop. I tried loading several CD-ROM drivers but the CD-ROM was still not detected. I wrote to the autoexec.bat and config.sys
The autoexec.bat was something like:
c:\windows\command\mscdex
The config.sys was something like:
Device=C:\Drivers\The driver name /v
The autoexec.bat and config.sys are just from memory at this time of writting.
The folder in C called "Drivers" contained the CD-ROM drivers.
The Windows\Command \mscdex "Command" was were the mscdex.exe file was located.
Could one of you pro's tell me what the heck I am doing wrong ?
I have spent hours trying to get the CD-ROM detected and I just can not do it
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Enigma

he "vnetbios.vxd" error is a networking thing. Remove all the virtual private networking **** in Add/Remove Programs > Windows Setup and that error will go away. Typical of a "full install" of Windows.

The CDROM requires no CONFIG.SYS or AUTOEXEC.BAT lines. Either you have a bent/pushed-in pin, a bad cable, the wrong jumper settings or a bad CD drive. You could also try installing the chipset drivers (Intel/VIA/SiS/ALi) for your motherboard.

Verify that the BIOS sees the drive first.

The CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files on the hard drive are normally not need after Win98 has been successfully installed, unless you have some very special hardware or anti-virus software that needs to be loaded before Windows itself.

The same two files are needed on a boot floppy in order to have access to a CD-ROM drive in DOS. Once Windows is installed, it uses its own included protected-mode drivers for CD/DVD/CD-RW drives, and does not need MSCDEX.

Try renaming the files to CONFIG.001 and AUTOEXEC.001 and then reboot.
