I was checking Pricewatch and Newegg and would appreciate some feedback from the pros' . Is, the USR5610 worth the additonal $28 dollars. I am not a gamer, just CAD and Database file transfers from work to home.

Thanks,

the lower priced ones are WinModems
the higher priced ones are REAL hardware modems.

so that's your choice.

if you are not planning to switch to another OS, anytime soon, then it should not be a problem to use the lower priced ones :t :D

WinModem only works if Windows is installed

OS is W98, may upgrade to XP. My undrstanding both are hardware modems. Both modems have good reviews. ITEh question is, is there $28 worth of benefit ,performance reliablity, dependability with the 5610

Here are some good info
http://www.usrobotics.com/support/product-template.asp?prod=5610b
there seems to be 2 version of the 5610
one is the WinModem version, and 5610-B seems to be the Real Hardware modem.

the other one is actually an 2977 OEM-condor OEM 95, NT4

Thank You AG. Great info. I have made one bad purchase by not doing my homework. I do not want to mess with a winmodem nor make another bad purchase. Have one now and it is a pain in the neck. Worked great the first time and poorly there after. Will connect to AOL, menu screen displays, then the screen goes black. The next time through I will get a fatal error message at 09. From then on it fails to connect. Have tried the latest drivers after visiting a number of modem sites that said check the firmware. I have been unable to find any posts that would help in solving the problem, sooo new hardware modem.

again Thanks
