Great!! Check out our web page for information on setting up the Seti@Home client(there are a few ways to do it).

www.setiteam.com

Basically, install the client and get registered with seti@home. Then you can get a work unit.

For first timers it's good to do at least one unit before you start customizing the client. It's also good to disable the screensaver, in destop properties, and run seti in the background. It's a bit faster that way.

You can also join our team at anytime by going to the team stats page here:

http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/stats/team/team_130637.html

Click on Join and enter your username and the password seti gives you. Then you're in!

Yeah dont use software coolign apps whilst running it as they will both run offa idle loops, meaning less performance to SETI...

Tell us what you've done so far.

If you're receiving data it should only take a few seconds to start working.

Work unit packets are approximately 340kb.

Make sure, if you have a personal firewall, that you allow SETI to access the web.

What's seti. Why do it?

vibe666

it can take anywhere from 2 hours to 2 days depending on the speed of your PC. I have a PII300 64MB and it takes me 15-16 hours per WU, but a P4 2.5Ghz will be about an hour and a half or less per work unit.

As for why do it. why not? there is a purpose to it in the end. to try and discover life outside of our solar system, and if there is something out there then the ramifications could be quite astronomical (if you'll pardon the pun).

Your PC will be sitting there doing nothing for a good part of the time it is on. if you're not running anything more than a web browser, word processor or similar then the CPU is only going to get a tiny bit of it's potential usage while it is on. SETI@home takes advantage of this and uses that 'idle' time to examine radio telescope data for signals.

There are 75 members of the team, and about 40 of those are currently active in the group. most of us spend time in these forums and there is a certain cameraderie to be had, knowing how many units you have done compared to the others.

New years day I was No.1, but now I'm way back in 18th place due to not having a PC for a few months and now having an old crappy one and I'm shortly to be overtaken by 'itsstillmike', but I have a plan to get my speed up.

it's fun. in a geeky sort of way :D

What are you system stats.

Wu's will take alot longer with the client you are useing. I suggest once you get one wu done that you switch to the command line client an seti hide. You have faster results that way.

Here is a link to some guides to help you set seti hide up.

Hope this helps. :t

256mb ram

what isthe difference between them?

 :)

what isthe difference between them?

well the big difference is the way they do a work unit..
you are using the gui client and it does wu's slower do to the graphics using a big part of you idle time.

setihide (CLI) may not be a pretty, but it does wu's faster. just make sure you don't use the screen saver. use blank or make sure you have the power saving set up to shut monitor off after a certain amount of time.

p4 1.7 with setihide (CLI) should net you 1 wu every 3-1/2 to 4 hrs.

ammm

just one small problem now..

whenI run this seti command line my system kinda hangs and I gota restart it..
any idea why?

and what is seti hide for?

:)

Scavenger7

Setihide is like gui client without graphics.. Better and Faster interface.

System hang.. Go to Start click on run. Type MSCONFIG than go to STARTUP. Look for anything seti and un-check it.Hit apply the system will prompt for a restart click yes. This will keep the old client from starting. That could be the reson for the hang.

mcool61

So best to uninstall original version before trying setihide?

Scavenger7
09-01-2002, 04:07 AM
No, Just diable it in MSCONFIG so it will not auto start. the command line client and seti hide will use everything there. Setihide is the loading program you will use to run the program.. instead of the seti@home exe (thats what you disable in MSCONFIG). Thats why you have to put CLI and hide into the Seti@home dir.

I'll have to try & finger out this setihide thing as i can use all the help i can get. Looks like about 24 hrs for 1 wu if I don't do anything else. Currently on track for about 45 hrs. Poor Samual 2 must not be able to run fast enough to keep the wheel turning on this via cyrix. 733mhz cpu, 384mb sdram. Guess I finally found a reason to build something faster.:D

Scavenger7
09-01-2002, 11:27 AM
My other machine is a 933mhz 6 1/2 to 7 hrs per wu.
and athlon 1.8ghz 3 to 3 1/2 hrs per wu.

and i am currently working on a new comp.
i am have a K7D Master-L mainboard by MSI.. i can't wait to finish it. should put some points on then..

I hope you can work out your setihide probs. you should have under 10 hrs with your setup, once get seihide figured out..:D
