BeOS is also free, but not too many Software for it. SOLARIS (unix) is also 100% Free, but as well, not too many Software for it. yet of course the WordStar Office is also free for it. Now if you are not so expert in computer get MS Win2k DocEvi1 08-26-2002, 01:57 PM True enough, but depends on the business. Can you afford to retrain your staff? Can you afford to lose some of the compatability with MS Office and the like? Personally I would stick with windows for workstations, Linux / Unix for the servers. Stefan RampageIII 08-26-2002, 02:54 PM Don't you mean StarOffice ? I used to use WordStar years ago but haven't seen it around for some time. Use WordPerfect now. Nukes 08-26-2002, 02:55 PM Or OpenOffice (Staroffice, but with the LGPL) www.openoffice.org AllGamer 08-26-2002, 03:01 PM Originally posted by RampageIII Don't you mean StarOffice ? StarOffice = WordStar + other stuff yeah i did meant StarOffice, just when i was replying couldn't quite remember the exact name :p as you can see i hardly do any work expect Game, and being at work, and hang out here in SysOpt :p :D :t RampageIII 08-26-2002, 03:02 PM Just looked it up: http://wwws.sun.com/software/star/staroffice/6.0/get/endof52download.html Doesn't look like a free download anymore.:( Maybe someone has a good ftp site that still has it. AllGamer 08-26-2002, 03:13 PM I see why What options are available to customers that want to download StarOffice 5.2? A. Customers can go to OpenOffice.org to download OpenOffice 1.0 at no charge; OpenOffice 1.0 shares the same code base as StarOffice 6.0. it's now being replaced by the new OpenOffice http://www.openoffice.org/dev_docs/source/1.0.1/index.html#en Nukes 08-26-2002, 03:16 PM They started charging for it a while back. That's why I suggested openoffice, as the non-proprietery portions of staroffice were poured into that when Sun started charging for StarOffice. The reason they are charging is that they have to pay licences to various companies to use their standards etc, these are the parts that have not been put into openoffice. RampageIII 08-26-2002, 04:27 PM Just in case someone wants the Windows version of Star Office: http://www.bilkent.edu.tr/bilkent/services/admin/bcc/staroffice/dnload.htm Jackmc 08-26-2002, 07:59 PM Best OS using windows, 98 - 98S- Me- 2000 or XP, which one would be better. omega31 08-26-2002, 08:09 PM Windows 2k. Not as much fluff as XP. BipolarBill 08-26-2002, 08:37 PM Windows 2000. xxmindcrimexx 08-26-2002, 08:54 PM If you're on a tight budget, don't forget about WIN NT 4. Yea I know, it's old....really old but you can get a copy for next to nothing on ebay. Some of the drawbacks are no USB, M$ will be or has stopped support for it. But with the service packs installed it is rock solid. Just a thought. Greymon 08-26-2002, 08:56 PM We use Windows 98 with Office 97 at work. It works fine all day every day. Nukes 08-27-2002, 08:22 AM 2k, Simply, unless you want to spend the time cleaning all the **** out of xp. 2k is cheaper, and stable, new service pack out that means there aren't too many updates you will require. It also has hardly any software compatibility problems, unlike XP, where widely used business software like SAGE won't always work (depending on type of sage) Don't use 9x for a business system, 2k is many times more secure. Here's another Vote :t and Nuke is right ;) XP cost too much right now, and it's just more of a Toy than a Business OS heck people still run NT4 because of the very same reason, they don't want their workers to be playing games, or WASTING TIME fiddling around with the WINDOWS THEMES, instead of working ;) so either NT4 or Win2k is good Win2k is more stable but if you want FREE STUFF, and not hard to learn get what i suggested earlier which is 1. LINUX 2. Solaris 3. BeOS BipolarBill 08-27-2002, 12:24 PM Solaris x86 and BeOS are no more. omega31 08-27-2002, 07:01 PM Originally posted by BipolarBill Solaris x86 and BeOS are no more. BeOS may be gone, but there is the OpenBeOS Project (http://open-beos.sourceforge.net/news.php) BipolarBill 08-27-2002, 07:36 PM Some points to ponder: 1. Apple's new OS 10.2 (Jaguar) networks with Windows natively now. 2. Apple has approached Intel and AMD about having their CPU made by someone other than Motorola. The CPUs are close enough in architecture that it would not present a challenge. 3. Apple OSX is based on Unix 4. Linux and FreeBSD are based on Unix and run on PC 5. Drivers are available for most PC hardware on Linux and FreeBSD. I ask you - if Jobs starts getting CPUs made by Intel or AMD, how long would it be before he could create an Apple OS that will run on PC hardware? omega31 08-27-2002, 07:55 PM Originally posted by BipolarBill I ask you - if Jobs starts getting CPUs made by Intel or AMD, how long would it be before he could create an Apple OS that will run on PC hardware? Great! Like we need another candy-flavored OS.:p SysOpt.com
