Not sure what type of mobo this is but the book says
AMD 600-1000Mhz

Is this cast in stone or could I flash the bios & up the
ceiling speed?

Don't have paperwork to hand sorry chaps

What do you guys think??:t

Check out the motherboard manufactorer website for more details on motherboard bios updates.

Yeah BIOS updates can help boost the speed capability of the mobo's, for example the stock bios on my Kt7a only supports up to 1.2ghz, but with an upsdate it will now go up to 1.4ghz, so have a look around :), although you obviously cant put a processor over 1ghz to do the BIOS flash as it wont post... hmmmn

Processor speed ranges printed in mobo manuals are often out of date. The key factors in determining processor support are things like voltage support and FSB etc. You'll need to find out the exact model to know for sure. A BIOS update might or might not make a difference. It is possible the board is limited to FSB 100MHz and pre-XP processors (i.e. Tbird / Spitfire).

Actually had the same thing with my mb, wasn't built for the xp, but I put an xp in it, and it booted up just fine, just at 100X11.5 or 1150 mhz, instead of 133. And it saw it as a regular Athlon. Did the Bios flash, and now it sees everything just fine. So it may work to at least do the flash.

Officially my mobo dont support the XP's however word is if you pop the chip in, power up - nothing will happen, then do a soft restart and voila... something to do with the different power up routines for the XP..

As pointed out in previous comments, nothing is cast in stone. I am running a PCChips M830LR MB that states in the manual that the max cpu speed as 1.4 GHZ but it correctly recognizes an XP1800+ and I just set up the same board for a friend with an XP 2000+ and it to was properly recognized. As long as the core voltage is correct and the socket fits then you should be able to boot at a lower speed and still upgrade the bios if necessary to get the max speed from the cpu if a bios upgrade is necessary.

Well i'll not be dabblign with anything over the reccomended speed in this as the next time i upgrade CPU i'll be looking for a mobo with DDRRAM support to go with it...

You should be able to ID your Motherboard Here (http://www.motherboards.org/mobocop.html) using MoboCop.
