I am new to these electronic doodads and have a Compaq Presario laptop 12XL300. It is about 18 months old and have
only downloaded Norton, Pop up killer and Adaware. Everything else is from Compaq/Norton/Miscrosoft. My problem is starting
on 22/5 and for five times since, while reading/typing e mail this
thing will just shut off and reboot itself. Any suggestions?

Does it only happen while e-mailing? State your OS and application versions, please.

Sorry, I have Windows ME and I was not on the battery.
Application version????? While typing an E mail, reading an
e mail & reading some messages that were posted on a site
that I visit every day. These are things that I do everyday.

...then, again, what's your OS ?... exactly ? Windows 98, 98SE, ME, 2000, XP Home, XP Pro, ???...

There are so many "shutdown problems" around, depending on the Operating System...

We'll help ya; let us know a bit more...

I am using Windows ME, Microsoft Internet Explorer. No battery
involved, just reading or typing and all of a sudden a shut down
with an immediate reboot while I sat here watching it.

That's a wierd problem. Try turning off all the power management options in the bios and win ME.

Say, there's a kid name Billy Martin at my school, but you must be someone else. That kid wouldn't have a clue how to use a computer. :t

Turn off the power management in BIOS!!! This event isn't a regular thing as it has happened 22/5, 27/7, 8/8, 17/8 and 23/8
and there is no way for me to tell when it will happen again. No
I am not the Billy Martin in your school who doesn't know anything
about computers, but we do have something in common, I don't
know anything about these electronic doodads either! Many
thanks.

You've a bad power connection. You stated that you were not on the battery. Your laptop gets power from an AC outlet via an AC to DC adapter. Your laptop is also fairly old, and has most likely had the thing plugged in and unplugged often. We're I you I'd opt to see if that dc input plug has an open circuit. If it does occasionally open up you'd definitely go down.

I'd try using only the battery, unless you've also seen and know that the thing will turn off even on battery. It's possible that it's been dropped a few times, and consequently has a crack in the pcb, but that's again speculation. Hope that helps.
