I am glad someone has asked this, it's always been a bit of a mystery to me as well.
I have a us robotics external 56k. I have done all of the registry tweaking and any extra enhancements that I can do.
here it is....... I connect at 115,200. Now I am not sure if this is a result of the "tweaks" or not. port settings in the device manager for com 2 are set at maximum 921600. Now is my port speed 115,200 or what? and if so then why do other 56k'rs connect at, say 56,000 or 49,000 etc...
I do hope someone can shed additional light on this.

Not always. It depends on factors such as your phone lines in the house, your ISP, the phone company's lines, and such.

When you dial up, the modem and your ISP negociate on a speed that they can both handle, and that will not be above 56k.

I usually connect at 49666 http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif

There are ways to speed it up www.tweak3d.net (http://www.tweak3d.net) is a good place to get some tips.

Moreover, even though the technology can go 56K, the maximum speed allowed by law is 53K. At least that was the case last time I looked.

RM, some modems report the connection speed factoring-in software compression.

You would only get anywhere near that speed if you downloaded some massive text file directly into memory or something as unrealistic.

The modem's v.90 protocol can compress text much better than it can binary files, so it won't reach that speed if you're DLing from Napster, for instance.

RenaissanceMan, this 115200 of yours is only the state your modem is connecting to your PC not the actuall connection speed to the Internet.
