How long do they last if clocked a few mhz from max with some decent air cooling?

Has it ever been proven that a CPU has a shorter life when overclocked?

Just sold an Athlon Classic Slot A 700 OC'ed to 850mHz using GFD... had over two years use as gaming machine (plus ran Seti@Home) by my 9-year old, the new owner is using this CPU to crunch data 24/7 for a distributed computing application. No problems.

Have an 18 month old TBird 1.2/200 OC'ed to 1.4/266, also used as gaming machine plus running Seti@Home command line client 24/7... no problems.

Current pcs include an XP2100+ OC'ed to XP2200+ (1817mHz @ 139mHz FSB) and a P4 1.6A @ 2.134gHz (133mHz FSB). Both run Seti command line client 24/7.

Bottom line is a properly cooled OC'ed CPU should last to -- at least -- its obsolesence point, where you would want to replace it anyway. That's JMHO.

For as long as you can keep the computer, or for as long as you pay your electric bills
:t :D

have some old OC-ed CPUs and they are way over 6+ yrs old, and still kicking.

Mabey it shortens it to 99 years instead of 100. :p :)

CPU's have a finite lifespan anyways, so if you do o/c em, you'll prolly find that when they do burn out they will be extremely obsolete, in my choice there is no choice -- OC the mutha ;)

Yep, even if it dies in 10 years who cares?

Some may remeber I dug into this a while back. Max temps/vcore etc. on cpu's. Its funny, Intel claims to be a 90year cpu. Sure AMD does too. So if Oclocking reduces the gate life to 10% of original, it now gonna last 9 years. You gonna have it in 9 years? Not me so O'clock it. Or it'll be like my 486 33mhz- a dust collector by then!;)

it's true depending how you OC-ed it, it might not even last you 1 minute
:D

that's good to know, maybe i should reconsider overclocking my processor back up to 1.6ghz. i mean, 55C isn't THAT hot right?

lol. i'll do that when the new games come out...doom3, quake4, UT2003....i'll have a ghost of a chance at playing them in playable framerates, so overclocking is my only hope!

MY SECRET WEAPON!

PS: i'm also overclocking my gf4ti4200 to ti4400 speeds (275/550)

I really dont think the requirments will hit over 1.2ghz in processor speed for those game, but only time will tell. :t

I dont think u should worry about it because by the time it maybe dies, you have already got a newer cpu and perhaps a better mobo.

I am sure the CPU should last as long as 2 years , this is the time u should need t get a new mobo and cpu again.

Then again i have been using my 633 overclocked to 790 , and it had lasted me for 2.4 years , so i dont know.

Anyways, take care.
