Just set up my new 12/10/32A Plextor last night. Works like a charm. However, I have two questions:
1. I had to rearrange my IDE set up to hook up the Plextor in an optimal way. I made the existing CD-ROM a slave on the primary IDE port (on which the HD is the master) because I read that having the Plextor and the CD-ROM on the same IDE port will comprimise the performance of the writer (I read this in the Plextor manual). My question is, does this master/slave setup matter all that much? If the CD-ROM is the slave on the primary IDE, will it reduce performance of the HD or the CD-ROM?
2. I would like to burn some old casette tapes onto CD's. Do I need special software to render analog sound into digital sound? What is the best (and most economical) way to do this?
Your responses are appreciated.

rowan,
I've got my Plextor 12/10/32A set up as a slave on IDE 2 with my DVD drive as master on IDE 2 and don't notice any problems or slowdowns burning CDs in that configuration. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
I have my Plextor 8/4/32A connected on the secondary IDE channel as Master with my CDROM as Slave and I have no problems with it either. I hear people getting coasters when they have it setup that way, but never in my case! I've had all my systems this way and never caused a problem. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif

I useed to have my cd-rom and cdrw on the same ide channel but I always had problems burning cds. Then one wonderfula and glorious day I read that if you put the cdrw on its own channel by itself then it might actually work properly. After I switched them around I have had very little trouble burning cds. I for one would recommend giving the cdrw its own dedicated ide channel. (It was easy for me as I have 2 ultra 33 channels and 2 ultra 66 cahnnels).

I have 4 IDE channels, so cant help ya there, but to Answer #2. Did your Plextor come with Adaptec Ez CD Creator deluxe? If so, You can use Spin Doctor to record from Cassette > Wav File. Im sure there are more ways, but thats all I can think of right now.

I also have the 8x4x32 Plextor, it's set as the slave with my 52X CD ROM as master.
I've had this drive a few weeks now and not much success, 4 coasters so far. I am not sure if it's the configuration as the slave or other things. Usually the error I get is that the CD ROM cannot provide tha data fast enough to keep up with the writer. With a 52X CD drive and writing at 8X, I don't understand this.
Can anyone think of what I need to do? Should I shut down all programs running in the background?
System specs:
AMD 1GHz T-Bird
256 MB RAM
Win ME
Adaptec EZ CD 4
Nero Burning 5

I'm just back from installing a new PlexWriter 12/10/32A. Everything in the Plextor manual suggested that the PlexWriter should be the master, but if I moved the ATAPI Zip to slave on the secondary channel, then the Bios kept detecting the Zip as floppy drive B:. I'm going to try the PlexWriter as a slave to the Zip and see if there are any ill effects.
mgordon99, in most cases, the CD-R should not be on the same channel as the drive you're reading from. The Plextor 8/4/32 doesn't have BURN-Proof, which is supposed to completely eliminate coasters because the CD-R just stops writing if the buffer runs empty, then resumes writing again when the buffer is full.

i also have my plextor 12/10/32a at same ide channel with cdrom haven't had any problems burning. buffer stays at steady 90%+ all the time. im using 80pin ata66 ribbon for my burner it seems there are no differences between 40pin and 80pin.

BURN-Proof works! http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif In one session, I just burned 611MB from 3 different drives onto a back-up CD... two of the drives were on the other end of the network. Meanwhile, I was surfing the net and downloading newsgroup messages with Outlook Express.
From now on, when I need a drink coaster, I'll buy it at the store instead of making them in my CD-R. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif
