Hi there. I have a problem with my computer. My system specs are. AMD XP 1800, volcano7 cpu fan, Epox 8K3A board,256DDR ram, Geforce 2MX400 graphics card,Dynalink 56k external e modem,40gig 7200spin seagate HD, 300watt AMD power supply, Running Windows XP pro. CPU temperature is average 48 degrees, The system is not overclocked . Just running at default speeds for the processor. My system has was built about 3 months ago and has been running perfectly until lately . While it is sitting there running nicely it just restarts on its own. Even if no one is using it , it will just restart on its own. I have 2 other systems running in the same room and they are NOT effected so mains power seems ok. Its a tricky one, if anyone has any clues,i would appreciate them.

First disable automatic restarts. Control Panel > System > Advanced > Startup and Recovery. Untick "Automatically restart" and set the memory dump to None.

Usually, this is a power supply issue, but see if you get a blue screen and note the error message first.

Your system crashing is what was causing the Restarts. Now instead of restarting, you will get the BSOD.
You will need to write down the error you receive on the BSOD screen so we can help you more. Without knowing what kind of error you're getting it could be many possibilities of what is causing the crashing.

.Howdy there again. Blue screen again. Here is the error message.
If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a drive is identified in the stop message, disable the drive or check with the manufacturer for drive updates. Try changing video adapters.

Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then select Safe Mode.

Technical information:
*** STOP: 0X0000008E (0XC0000005, 0XBF87701E, 0XF35AFC38, 0X00000000)

*** win32k.sys - Address BF87701E base at BF00000, DateStamp 3b7de698.

Beginning dump of physical memory.
Physical memory dump complete.
Contact your system administrator or technical support group for further assisstance.

I have about 28gig hard drive spare. All my drivers are up to date Any idea.

ok after some searching this is what i've found from M$

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;q160601&

http://search.microsoft.com/Default.asp?&so=RECCNT&boolean=ALL&siteid=us&p=1&nq=NEW&qu=STOP%3A+0X0000008E&btnsearch=GO&ig=1&ig=2&ig=3&ig=4&ig=5&ig=6&ig=7&ig=8&ig=9&ig=10&i=00&i=01&i=02&i=03&i=04&i=05&i=06&i=07&i=08&i=09

both and all of them points to a common problem, Hardware.

it's just some sort of conflict with one or more of your hardware with the software.

and that is not an easy task to find

except by removing all non essential parts, and rebooting each time by adding each hardware back, until you can find which is the one causing those errors.

and then work from there :t

On the whole these issues tend to be bad memory or PSU issues in my experience. Download MEM Test 86 v2.7 from tucows and run that. It'll take a while but will tell you of any problems at all with your memory. Otherwise try and get a different PSU from somewhere and try that for a while. Make sure the power supply is known to be good, reliable, and capable of running your system, I.E. 300 watts plus.

Well thanks everybody for all your replys. I have gone to the trouble of doing a complete dismantle and a careful rebuild .I am not sure if i have it fixed or not but since then it hasn,t had any blue screens. I will wait and see. THANKS AGAIN.
