I am trying to attach a HP Scanjet 4200C via a USB port to a W98SE computer. Device Manager says it is there - Scanning software says it is not. However, scanner seems to be trying to scan because the scanning mechanism moves just a trifle (1/16") several times but never really works. Any suggestions???
I hate USB:confused:

If your USB Host Controller is an Intel BA/BAM, change the driver to the Intel AB type.
Open System Information (MSINFO32.EXE) and navigate to Hardware Resources > IRQs. Click anywhere in the right pane and then press CTRL-A and then CTRL-C. You have copied that data to the clipboard. Paste that data in a reply here.
Let me know the OS.

I have copy the new chipset drivers fro Intel and still no success. The scanner seems to constantly cycle but still does not work. In fast seems to hang the system when this occurs. This is the info you requested:
OS is W98SE
IRQ's:
0 System timer
1 Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural Keyboard
2 Programmable interrupt controller
3 Promise Technology Inc. Ultra66 IDE Controller
3 IRQ Holder for PCI Steering
4 Communications Port (COM1)
5 TBS Montego II Sound Blaster Pro Emulation
6 Standard Floppy Disk Controller
7 ECP Printer Port (LPT1)
8 System CMOS/real time clock
9 Intel 82371AB/EB PCI to USB Universal Host Controller
9 IRQ Holder for PCI Steering

That setup looks good, but there may be phantom drivers in Safe Mode.
I would first boot to BIOS setup and enable "Reset Configuration Data" in the PCI section. Also look for "ESCD" or NVRAM" reset - it's the same thing.
Boot directly into Safe Mode and clean out the **** in Device Manager. The last thing to remove are the Root Hub and Host Controller in that order. I would further advise that you take this opprtunity to remove the HP scanner software and unplug the scanner.
Restart and install the scanner precisely as per instructions. HP hardware is very particular about how it's installed. If Applinking hangs, don't stop it. Go get a beer. :)

What kine of "****" in device manager am I looking for? what I see seems valid. Also, after resetting the "ESCD", will I need drivers for the sound, video, etc. cards??

ESCD is "extended system configuration data". Clearing it is like clearing CMOS without losing any settings. All it does is rearrange IRQs. No - you won't need any drivers.
You have looked in Device Manager in Safe mode? You don't have duplicate or old device drivers listed? That's really rare.
You want this thing fixed?

There are a "bunch" of duplicate drivers. I was a bit taken a-back by this. I have never seen this before. Your advice is right on!
The only confusing issue is that under "System Devices" there are multiple items under Motheboard Resources and IRQ Holder for PCI Steering, most of which are not active. I will remove them.
What causes this???
Gotta go to a meeting but will finish this off later.

Duplicate drivers are caused by shutting down a PC just before Windows loads and poor driver installation routines that leave old drivers behind.
If there are two Motherboard Resources, you can leave them both. You can also leave IRQ Holders alone. All other duplicates should be removed. Windows will reinstall one genuine driver per device on restart.

Everything looks good to me
except the Modem.
Have you tried new drivers and software updates for the HP scanner??
http://www.hp.com/cposupport/swindexes/hpscanjet49528_swen.html
appearently it does work.
it just seems like a software bug, to get kinda stuck after a little bit.
OH OH!! ALSO, check to see if your SCANNER, has a SCAN LOCK!
some scanner does, if that is set, then the scanner will do exactely what you described.
move a little bit, then dies.
i know at least 2 differen models / brands that has that feature.
One time i was almost pulling my hair trying to figure out what heck was wrong with the **** scanner, and after some careful inspection i found a LOCK SWITCH!!

Done it all, still doesn't work. Very frustrating. Will now trash the scanner. Thanks to all for your help. One final comment - AllGamer mentioned all looks good except the modem. That concerns me. What did you see wrong there???
Yes, the scanner was unlocked but it would be something easily overlooked.
Thanks.

Don't sweat the modem. If it works, it's good.
It just occured to me that the USB cable may be at fault. Is it the one that came with it? They are proprietary sometimes - especially HP's.
Isn't it funny how cables are included with scanners, but still not with printers? Man, is the printer biz cutthroat or what? I think that the Fed should mandate that cables are included with printers. Cheaping out on a $4 USB cable is really low.

I'll check the cable on Monday - taking the weekend off. Currently downloading new drivers from HP. Only have a 56K modem so it will take awhile. Actually, I really want to get this scanner going. Nothing to do with the value of the scanner but rather I hate to be defeated. Sort of a personal thing.

Been there - spent a whole weekend trying to get an HP SCSI card to work on Win98SE. I wouldn't listen to HP and MS about it being incompatible - noooo.
I bought an Adaptec at Best Buy on Sunday afternoon at 4PM. :(
