I am having a nightmare to say the least with a PC that i am apparently 'fixing' !

Okay, basically the problem started with lots of unknown errors occuring all over the show whilst running on WIN 98.

I then take the system away for inspection and decided that the best thing to do would be to start from scratch. There were signs of a very unstable system!!

The system looks something like this:

AMD K6 - 550 mhz (approx)
Seagate 10gig HDD
Rage Pro Graphics
Soundblaster sound (basic card)
96mb RAM

And of course a fresh install of Windows Millenium.....

Now, i should add that i actually done a LOW LEVEL format using SEAGATES own DISK WIZARD - just to make sure we had a squeaky clean HDD etc....

Since installing....
The PC continues to feel 'unstable' with a range of error messages consistently popping up when attempting to start an application or open most folders. The errors include KERNEL32.DLL, Explorer errors, Shell32.DLL, ....DLL errors galore!

Always causing an 'illeagal operation', blue screen of deaths mentioning VxD errors, etc etc - All together we have a problem!

Please assist where you can, hopefully i have explained it clear enough to give you an idea ....

Many Thx Guyz,

A mega stressed Loul

Just put a wallpaper (background only) on the desktop and basically i get an 'unknown error in Explorer' and then the RESTORE ACTIVE DESKTOP screen comes up, when pressed it again displays the error THEN the Restore Active etc etc etc etc

Cant do anything now - permanant explorer error in active desktop, only thing to do is reboot

What is going on with this thing????

It Sounds like as if you were having either:

1. a memory resident virus
2. a bad RAM
3. just bad settings on the BIOS

Ok so to fix #3 it's very easy
just go into the BIOS, and select
"user BIOS default settings"
or something along that line.

if say it's case #2, you'll can run a DOS RAM test software.

if it's #1, then reboot from a Clean boot disk, created on some one else computer, that has a working Antivirus Software.

so try that for now.

Okay, thanks...

Continued with #3 sadly, not the problem - problem continues.

Do you know where i can download this diagnostic software?

The memory thing sounds very positive. Makes sense as apparently she has always had this problem. Awaiting your reply

Thx
