Hi everyone,

I'm about to buy a notebook computer. As a long time desktop user, I know (or knew) very little about notebooks.

After searching the Net extensively, I came across the term 'Shared Memory'

So my question is :

Since I need the notebook only for office applications and internet access and maybe watching DVD when I'm away, does the 'Shared Memory' have a negative impact on the performance of a notebook.

The notebook which I found has a mobile P4-1.6 and 256 SDRAM and 15,1" screen.

Thanks for your help.

Shared Memory = Total System RAM
is used between your CPU and your Video.

Usually you can limit the amount of Shared Memory.

So yes it definitely has an inpact in performance.

So, that means upgrading the memory would help to minimize the performance loss ?

More memory would be good, yes. Although for what you're planning to use it for, just leaving it at 256 mb even with shared memory would be ok.

My notebook is so old that it has dedicated video memory, albeit only 1 mb. So with the dedicated video memory, my notebook can do a maximum of 81 mb of ram, which I have in there. Old sucker, P150.

correct

it shouldn't be an issue if you have at least 256 meg of ram.

and after all these years, it's still DARN expensive to upgrade Laptop RAM, and HDDs.
