I can't remember how to change the default browser so that I can control which browser opens when I click a link in my mail client (Outlook 2000). I want to go from IE6 to Netscape 6.2.

Can someone please help??

Go to Control Panel
then Internet Options
then Programs tab
then remove the checkmark for "IE should check to see if it's the default blah blah..."

and you are Done

Nope, didn't work.

The ? explanation says:

"Specifies whether you want Internet Explorer to remain your default Internet browser, even if you install additional Internet browsing software.
When this check box is selected, each time Internet Explorer starts it checks to make sure it is still registered as the default Internet browser. If another program is registered as the default browser, Internet Explorer asks whether you want to restore Internet Explorer as your default browser."

What I need to know is how to register Netscape as the default browser. I've a sinking feeling that its gonna involve reinstalling Netscape (boo-hoo) but I'm gonna give this thread a few more days yet!

If you're running XP, there is no method to change it in the options, try looking in the netscape settings for default browser setting. Even with SP1, xp only lets you change it back to IE.

------------

Just make sure you select yes, to let Mozilla be the default browser, and it'll take care of all the setup for you.

then if you want you can uninstall it.

found at : http://wp.netscape.com/download/win32_instructions.html

Exit Communicator. Important: Make sure Communicator and all of its components are NOT running. Go to the Netscape directory on your hard drive. Open up your hard drive (usually labeled C: drive). Next, find and open the folder labeled Program Files. Inside you will find a folder labeled Netscape. Important: This is the default location for Netscape; the location on your particular computer may differ. If necessary, you can use the Find feature in the Start menu to locate it.
Inside the Netscape folder, open up the folder labeled Users.
Inside Users, open the folder with the same name as your Communicator profile. There may be only one folder, but if there is more than one, choose the one that coincides with the profile you select when you launch Netscape.
Back up the file called prefs.js somewhere on your hard drive. Note: This file may simply be labeled prefs.
Open this file by using a text editor. By default the pref.js file is associated with Netscape. In order to open this file with a text editor, select the file with a right click and choose the menu item called Open With. In the window that appears, select Notepad or Notepad.exe from the list. Next, make sure that the "Always use this program to open this type of file" checkbox at the bottom of the window is unchecked. Then, click the OK button to close this window and open the pref.js file.
In this file, you will see a line (you may have to scroll down a bit) that reads:

user_pref("browser.wfe.ignore_def_check", true);
Leaving the line otherwise untouched, change the word true to the word false. Note: Disregard the text at the top of this page that reads "This is a generated file! Do not edit." If you do not see the above line in your prefs file, Communicator may already be configured as your default browser.

Save the file (choose Save from the File menu) and close the window.
Next time you launch Communicator, you will be presented with a dialog box asking if you would like Netscape to be set as your default browser. Choose Yes.

Have you tried running xp without IE?
MMC, device manager, service manager or any computer managment thngs won't work as they need IE 5.5 or higher.
Makes XP much more stable though. It is a tradeoff.
Allgamer: What you said DOES NOT work, it merely makes IE check to see whether it is currently set as the default browser when you click the icon. FOR IE.
It will not chnge the default browser to netscape. if he doesn't have the browser item in the programs tab then he is using xp or 2kSP2.

But, yes, Mozilla ROCKS.
