Hey,

I got an old Netgear hub that I'm using to connect two pc's to our cable mode. I want to get a router instead to save the extra cost for the second isp address. I noticed that the lower priced routers don't have a firewall and the higher priced ones do.

Are the routers that have the the built firewall protection, better than my Norton Personal Firewall that we currently use? Or am I better off saving the extra cash and buying the lower priced routers. Was thinking about wireless, but I use two desktop in the same room. So why?

Thx

LINKSYS BEFSR41. Simplicity, outstanding value, and NAT firewall your looking for. Right now the regular price at best buy is $69. Look for the open box sale one's and they are alot less.

I got my Linksys BEFSR41 4-port router with NAT (firewall) for $79 at Best Buy about 5 weeks back. That's not too expensive.

Thanks for the tip. One question, what's the difference between the Firewall that comes with the router and my firewall that I bought. Is one better than the other?

A software firewall interacts with the user and is configurable. It also filters outgoing traffic. The router, while 90% effective, doesn't filter outgoing traffic and isn't really configurable. It's really good though. I finally just turned my firewall off because I haven't ever had a hit through the Linksys. :)

Hey, I wanted to find out what the difference is between the Linksys BEFSR41 & the BEFSR11 routers? I couldn't figure it out, is it more users or that it can connect more?

They both share the same IP address, thats what counts! I don't want to pay an extra $7.00 bucks a month to the cable guys for an extra IP address. Either one will let me expand right, add another pc or laptop?

Thx,

:D

If you have more than one PC, the BEFSR11 requires that you use a hub too because it only has 1 LAN port. The BEFSR41 and 81 have built-in hubs.

Not too long ago, Best Buy had D-Link DI-604 $30 after $10 rebate. Fry's Electronics, too. Has NAT and 4 port switch in it.

BTW, ReefDogg, I'm in SD, CA, too.

Build In Switches

Hub vs Switches has a big time difference in performance.

I was at Office Depot and they have the Linksys BEFSR41 at $59.99 after a $10.00 instate rebate and another $10.00 mail rebate to boot.

So I'm going to pick one up on friday. I hear that setup is a snap, just turn off my pc's, replace the hub with router and power back and follow the steps. I keep the same config. (cables, etc) right?

Thx!

p.s. Hi Omega in S.D. too! :t

If you had some time (& patience), you could d/l a copy of IPCop and run it on an old (P133 /32MB) box, w/ 2 10Mb nics.

IPCop is a linux firewall/proxy distro, works pretty good, and it has a nice price (free). It has a web interface for config, and has really good install documentation.

We use it @ work

Could be an option for ya
