My floppy goes off by its self.
If I hit ctl alt del, and bring up the programs there are several I don't know why they are open or what they do. Is there somewhere I can find out? I'm also going to list them here, maybe you have had the same problem or recognize the program.
I will label the ones I know.

Need a 486 mobo (here)
AOL (no grief, it's the kids act, must reconfig my DUN thingy)
msn messenger service (that's it)
explorer
fastfind
hpodlb08 (hp printer)
winampa (like it sez)
findfast
popproxy (pop proxy from Pmail?)
csinject
systray (stuff at r.bottom of screen?)
ptsnoop
stimon
atiptaaa
wkcalrm
win-pm32 (Pegasus Email 32)

Thanks
Che

Don't quote me, but I bet it's Fast Find. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

i don't recognize anything in that list other than the obvious. you may want to check you anti-virus proggy and see if it is automatically checking the floppy every so often. you can use the startup tab in msconfig to turn off much of that stuff in your list.

But what is fast find? Or findfast for that matter??
Hey Rat good call I looked in the scheduler and found "Symantec NetDetect" it's now in NetDetect heaven, but I'm not sure if that's it, I just installed Symantec a few days ago (for a 2nd or 3rd time). It has been doing it about 2 months and I can't rememeber the in and out of the software. I trashed out the HD when I pulled it out of one computer and put it my KT7 RAID then into this one, the newest one I built. MSI K7 ProA. I usually don't like the Symantic stuff unless I need it. I don't use anti-Virus software.
(hehehe can't help it, I like to walk on the edge) http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

find fast is part of ms office, it does an index of certain files on your drives for fast access. most people disable it in the control panel; it's somewhat of a resource hog.

buji, rat ... good call. I've heard of Findfast before but didn't know how to find it. Opened up the Control Panel and it practically jumped off the screen at me. Surreal, if you open up Findfast in Control Panel (look for binoculars), you will see a list of the drives that are apparently being scanned by this feature. Mine includes my C: and D: drives, which explains why my D: drive, which is hardly ever used, spins up spontaneously several times a day. In an earlier life, my floppy drive also came to life all by itself several times a day, just like yours. I did a very unconventional reinstall a few months ago and that apparently took the floppy out of the list.

the find fast, if i remember right, has to be disabled on a regular basis. i may be wrong, but i think you can only disable find fast fro like 99 days at a time..... again, i may be wrong.... it's been a long time since i used it.

Taking advantage of a double post Surreal wonders to herself "But how do I figure out what those programs are? Because it seems to me any thing running (and all things) would show up when you hit ctl alt del" hmmmmm

oK, well, I went and thought I disabled it as soon as I read Rat mans post, I chose close and stop,,
What prompted me to present this was the floppy was going off again so it happened about 5 min before I made the 1st post. But I checked this and saw

2/19/01, 6:24:27 PM, A new session of Find Fast has started.
I don't see any reference to A:\ and I disabled the Office short cut bar when it was installed. So this time I deleted the indexes, and told it to update every 0 hours and then selected close and stop.

Fast find runs from the startup directory on the start menu. take it out of there and all will be rosey. When i install office it is the first thing i do. Just send it straight to the recycle bin
