I am searching this brain trust for a recommendation. I have to stick with dial-up, so I am shopping for a new modem. Would prefer hardware, but if there are any dependable winmodems, I would consider them. Existing Modem is an Aceex HCF pain in ****, had poor info when made selection at swap meet.

Have been looking at 3com 2977, USR 5610 and Zoom 2919. No gaming requirements, just tons of IMs' for my daughter and Cad file, Database and spreadsheet sharing from office.

Rig: K7S5a, 1gig Duron, 128Pc133, 20GMaxtor, ATI 32DDR Video, Antec 300XP W PS, 180W combined, Thermaltake 6Cu HSF, W98 and on board sound. Upgrading to 256 Crucial 2100DDR and adding an Aopen CD burner.

Just a note, the MB has operated flawlessly for 2.5 months. This newbie has no gripes with this econo board.

Thanks AG. I have come across 3com 2977 OEMS at swap meets for $25. I have read you can get download the drivers from the USR site. I was interested in DSL , but there are big problems with lines in my neighborhood.

Modems files are usually TINY, cuz they are only .inf files 90% of the times, unless it's a WinModem. ;)
