I have a Windows 2000 Domain with a master/primary DC with AD services installed. when I try to setup a BDC/DC, I get this error message: "The operation failed because:
Failed finding a suitable domain controller for the domain XXXX. The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted."

I just wanted to add this:
The new server is working just fine as a stand-alone server. When I try to install the Active Directory Services on it to promote it to a BDC/DC so I get the mentioned error.

The new BDC/DC is the member of the Domain and can contact the PDC and everything is working just fine. Anybody knows what the problem is. Thank you in advace.

Get into Services on your DC and make sure everthing is up and running correctly.

Also if you didn't reboot after running dcpromo then do it. You aren't supposed to have to but things go a lot more smooth if you do.

I think with Windows 2000 Server, they are all just plain old Domain Controlers. I don't think there is a primary/backup choice. I am quite sure that domain controlers are all peers with each other.

If you have AD setup, that is a common problem. It seems to stem from the fact the PDC/BDC was an upgrade installation from NT4...and a fresh install of W2K non-upgrade style seems to correct this issue...

I'm sure other causes can be involved...but it is possible that if you made the PDC/BDC into peer servers first, the problem wouldnt exist.
