Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : How can I add an old WIN95 machine to wireless home network?

I am sharing a DSL connection between a WIN Me system, and XP system and a laptop running WIN95 Se. The laptop connects wirelessly using a Belkin WiFi PC card, and the two other machines are connected directly. I have an older Dell Dimension running the first generation of WIN95 that I sure would like to add to the list, but I can't seem to find a wireless card that says it will work with the first generation of WIN95.

just add a Wireless NIC

as simple as that
check out

www.linksys.com

as long as it says Win9x, or Win98, or even WinME, the drivers will also work for your Win95

Thanks AllGamer, but apparently it isn't that simple. I have not been able to find ANY wireless card that claims to support plain old WIN95. MOST say WIN98 at minimum. One (Belkin) said WIN95 Se.....I tried it and it didn't work.

Sorry AllGamer, I did find a Linksys card that claims to support WIN95. Thanks. I'll check it out.

win98 will work on most 486 systems if you have enough memory, etc. (I'm assuming that's maybe why it's still w95) - why not also just install w98 while you're at it - it'll help with any other device changes you make later on?

I have two wireless Diamond NIC's available that I could not use (since I do not want to downgrade my systems to Win95).

$20 each or $35 for both plus $7.50 shipping.

To rmanet: This machine is fourth in the food chain at our house and we have only four users. It is a Pentium 100 and has been rock solid and virtually bullet-proof since I bought it the month WIN95 was introduced. I have no other plans to upgrade it and the motherboard will only accept 64 megs of RAM. It has 48 megs now. The main purpose of adding it to the shared DSL access group is just to de-bottleneck the use of the other machines, so the upgrade to WIN98 doesn't look worth the potential hassle. If I had any other plans for the machine, though, your idea makes perfect sense. Thanks

Thanks! Stand by. I ordered the Linksys card last night from Dell. If it doesn't work, I'll get back to you.

heck - I'd call 'em and cancel - done it before when I placed an order then found it somewhere else cheaper - found most times the order hadn't left the order desk - that's a good price for those cards.
