any suggestions as to where I can run a modem speed test.

This one is showing 57,600 on a dial up, and it's a real old isa modem

However, you can try this (http://webservices.cnet.com/bandwidth/?tag=ex.cn.newsletters.remnant.webservices) one.

That 57,600 number is coming from the modem definition in Windows. It's the "maximum speed" you see in "properties" and, I think, is the transfer speed between the CPU and the modem. Why it shows up as your connection speed I don't know but it happens with some modems. In my case it was a Zoltrix SmartSpirit 56K with a Conexant (Rockwell) chip.
